Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

The shooting is one thing that stood out to me. For how unathletic and slow everyone is there is also not very good shooters on the team. Usually Iowa at least balances out the bad defense with good shooting. Honestly not sure what Iowa can be good at for offense outside of Sandfort, Freeman around the basket and Bowen driving

Krikke is deadly from midrange. We just doubled the **** out of him inside 15 feet, and he ended up playing further outside where he clearly wasn't comfortable.

I kind of think that limiting possessions might be good. If Fran can figure out how to effectively use Bowen in the half-court offense, there might be something there. Perkins is a nice player, but he's been a nice player for years. I keep expecting him to make a big jump and be the guy, but I just don't think he's good enough for it outside of a game here and there.

I'm not too sold on the two freshmen from IL. The post can be decent, but man he probably committed about 6 fouls in the first half going for rebounds when he had no shot that didn't get called. They were letting the game be physical, which is a bonus for ISU, but probably saved Freeman from lots of early foul trouble. He is a true Fr, but he's got a long way to go. The PG does some good things but he got overwhelmed by the defensive pressure a lot.

And I think I say this every year, but it just shocks me every year to see Iowa's basketball roster. How on earth can guys that have been in a college strength program for multiple years look like they do? The combination of skinny arms with no definition is mind-blowing.

This reminds me of what we did with Georges Niang!....

EXCEPT Georges was a 4-star top 100 guy (#69ish) that played at a premier prep school and excelled against future NBA players and CBB All-Americans all the way up. (Did you know he used to play with Nerlens Noel?)

He also had a sneaky good handle and foot speed. Not great, but good enough and a lot better than you'd think. He would often play point forward in the break, beat you off the dribble somehow in iso, lead the team in assists, and he could also rip your heart out from 3 consistently.

Doing it all with the awkward grace of your drunk uncle with two arthritic ankles and a fake knee... in sock feet... on grandma's slippery hardwood floors.

(Not even agreeing or disagreeing with you at this point. I just wanted to talk about him. God, I miss him.)

He's a great offensive fit for Iowa but he isn't going to be able to guard a soul in league play.

Krikke will probably average more points this year but I would take Rebraca over him. 4 of the last 5 games he has 3 rebounds or less and doesn't play a lick of defense inside.

Iowa's in trouble imo. This is their most unathletic team they've had there. Their best athlete honestly might be the guy from Belmont but he's horrible. Krikke has a great midrange but if that's taken away or if he's not hitting, he's useless out there. Dix is not a PG and I have zero clue why he was experimented there last night. Something's off with PMac right now and Perkins is either really good or bad. Sandfort is the only true P5 starter I'd say on that team right now.

Bowen had a decent night but he can't finish the basketball. Harding is not a Big 10 basketball player at this point. Freeman is going to be good and I do like him. He just happened to go up against some grown men last night.

The construction of Iowa's roster is really really bad. They have no guards. Fran has recruited like Sandfort was going to be able to slide into the Uhtoff type role where he can hunt and create his own shot. The kid is slow, unathletic, and a pure set shooter, I'm not sure why Fran thought he would be that type of a player.

Iowa's guards are not good enough ball handlers to break down a half court defense. They never have been under Fran so they run and gun, look for a guy who's spotting up or trailing, or when they've had a post they instantly throw it down low before the defense is set.

IDK. The folks here at work (admittedly not big donors) are very much in dgaf mode with Iowa bball. Just apathy. Has been for a while.

Closest they get to caring is if someone goes off one night, or generally being embarrassed by Fran's antics.
