Higher education moves at a slow pace. It is common to place a person in an interim role before selecting a committee. The interim role gives Barbara Wilson the ability to see how Goetz performs in the role. Often, universities place people in interim roles for years and then promote them to the role without a search. They use the rationale that the person has been doing the job for xx number of years, so there is no reason to do a search. Additionally, Barta left at the start of the academic year, which for people from academics is busy.I get that but the timing is weird. Why not have a committee in place as soon as Barta stepped aside?
A search firm? Why?
Agreed.Of course they're going to go through a formal search and waste a bunch of time and money, not a surprise.
You think other P5 universities would do it differently?Agreed.

What's the point of having Beth be interim and then doing a search? She's got the support of the coaches and looks to be a good fit. Why waste the money?
Most, if not all public universities are going to go through a formal, public search process for an AD. Not saying it isn't a waste of time or money, but it's not unique to Iowa. What's the point of having Beth be interim and then doing a search? Whatever you say squawk. It's dumb AF.Most, if not all public universities are going to go through a formal, public search process for an AD. Not saying it isn't a waste of time or money, but it's not unique to Iowa.
Didn't say it wasn't dumb. Just that ISU and probably every other P5 university would do the same thing.Whatever you say squawk. It's dumb AF.
My question is why wasnt this done a long time ago. Barta has been gone quite a while, you have someone in place that is probably the top candidate. So if it is just a formality or not, why wasnt this committee established as soon as Barta was on the way out. Most, if not all public universities are going to go through a formal, public search process for an AD. Maybe it's all just a formality, university knows it wants BG as the AD, has assurances that BG wants the gig, so this is just about going through the bureaucratic motions and the timing is essentially meaningless. My question is why wasnt this done a long time ago. Everyone has expected them to take the interim label off Goetz for a while, but now they set up a committee months late to look for someone else?
Iowa is such a cluster **** when it comes to management.
Good luck with that.I really hope KF gets his wish and they don’t hire Goetz…. and proceed to bring back BF!
