I don't agree with this take. Mulvey was a recruiting bust but that happens all the time. I don't know how the coaching staff wasn't being honest with him. If he had developed more he would have played but it just didn't work out. Word on the street is that Fran is doing him a solid by redshirting him so he can get his degree and then transfer without losing this year.

How many times has a player from Iowa entered the transfer portal only to return to Iowa because they don't have an opportunity elsewhere?

Also, Fran didn't do him a solid by convincing him to reclassify and join the team early.

Serious question but why don't these kids leave? What does Fran say or do to keep dead weight in the program? In today's era of college hoops it's insane how few kids transfer out and I don't men that in a good way.

The Mulvey and Ogundele types probably have no where to go. A bit of a roster management misstep by Fran to keep Mulvey and also bring in Even Brauns to fill a scholarship. Iowa's freshmen bigs seem to be good enough to fill depth roles though. Won't cost them as long as everyone stays healthy.

Both of Iowa's starting point guards to begin the season the last two years have transferred to other Power 5 schools. Toussaint and Ulis.

Mulvey isn't good enough to play at the next level down. He's going to have to go low major out east to ever see the floor. Fran asking him to reclassify was about the worst possible advice you could give to a developmental big.

I'm taking Iowa +12 tonight at Creighton. I think Creighton is definitely the superior team, but Fran's teams usually peak in November and I think they'll be able to score enough points to cover.

The way I see this game going is Creighton will be up by 15-20 in the second half, take their foot off the gas with a few minutes to play and Iowa covers with a late run.

Or I lose money and Iowa loses big. Darn.

I’m in the midst of one of my biannual trips to Dubuque to visit relatives…I’ve watched both the Hawk games. They have shooting, their guard play looks solid and the new big man is skilled around the basket. They seem to lack rebounding and as usual appear to be a step slow on defense…I anticipate a close game…90-86 or so.
Sandfort the elder is a nice player and looks a little bigger and stronger..the freshman big man looks ok, too. I’m concerned about how well they shoot the ball.

I think @GMackey32 is right for the most part. Although they have had a couple instances where guys land at other P5's. Pemsl transferred to Va Tech after 3 seasons at Iowa (was it 4?), and was in their rotation I believe. Still sucked and I think that was a bad year for Va Tech, but still...

We all thought Ulis was horrible, and left after what was it, 2 seasons? think he initially transferred to Nebraska, not sure if he's still on their roster or not as I know he was involved in the gambling probe, but if he was good enough for Fred...

There was another guard a few years back that spent a grad transfer year at Kansas. Moss, I think, and was involved in their rotation some...

Then there is Joe Toussaint, who has been with WVU and now Taco Tech since leaving the cushy confines of the Hawk men's basketball program. Toussaint I truly believe is a P5 player, though. Just a horrible fit in Fran's system. He is a perfect guard for a Big 12 team, and I think would have been a great fit on the first 2 TJ teams if I am being honest.

But yeah, the examples are few and far between. For every one of these guys, you have a half dozen or so Mulvey's, or in other words kids that really are not good enough to play at the P5 level but rather than move on and actually play somewhere, they ride the gravy train as long as they can. To be fair, Iowa State has had guys like this too, although far less frequent as they tend to get the message quickly and move on. But Terrence Lewis, Jakolby Long, and Zion Griffin are just a handful of guys that come to mind from the past 4-5 years that didn't pan out despite spending multiple seasons of eligibility at ISU. Lewis I think was here for 3, the other guys for 2.

Here is an interesting question for discussion: Are guys like Jbo, Connor, or Patrick P5 players at anywhere other than Iowa? Undeniable that their careers have been or were all propped up by the Garza's and Murray's of the world. I think they all 3 would have been MVC all-stars at best.
