Tough day for EIU hoops hopes

Yep, Fran as a coach is similar to Tom Davis in that neither recruited well, but still had decent results. Fran is a terrible recruiter for a variety of reasons, but yet still fields a competitive team most years.

The B1G was pretty tough when Davis was there and his teams could compete and actually play tough vs. the glass jaw of Fran's teams.

Davis was just a much more respectable coach demeanor wise too iirc.

How many of those ranked teams with Davis did he have with Raveling players? Also, the Elite 8 and one of the Sweet 16s was also with Raveling players. Dr. Tom walked into a way better position than Fran did. I feel that Dr. Tom and Fran are pretty similar, weak recruiters, but better than average coaches.
Got it, Fran needs a few more years to pull things together.

Last Sweet 16, which, BTW has occurred since Fran's last Sweet 16, was his. That was the year he was run out.

But I get it where you are heading. Still curious that Tom wasn't good enough and Fran is.

Tom Davis would run laps around Fran. Better win %, played tougher schedule, went to tournament more often and went past 1st weekend. Finished season ranked 6x with average ranking of about 15, Fran finished season ranked 4x with average rank of 22. Both have 13 seasons complete at Iowa.

Tom Davis run out because he didn't have 'success' in tourney despite 2x Sweet 16 and an Elite 8.

Fran isn't sure there really is a Sweet 16.
Weren't his best teams recruited by Raveling?

His best teams were, yes. I won't argue Davis was a better recruiter but he still was a better coach.

For crying out loud, Fran has had National Players of the year, Davis didn't have those. Do we really want to base the argument of their capability on talent level of players they have had?

Fran is not worthy to tie the lachet of Tom Davis' sandles.

Don't kid yourself. Look at Sweet 16s and beyond. Doctor Tom was a great, great coach.

Too bad you ran him out of Iowa City so that you could reach the next level with Steve "The Incredible Amazing *******" Alford.

It was a saaaaad day when Alford left Iowa.

Dr. Tom was good enough for a long time, until he wasn't and the fans wanted more. I feel we are there at this point with Fran too. At least I am.

The feeling I got from the Dr. Tom situation was he was likeable but fans didn't think the ceiling was high enough. With Fran I'm not sure if it's his attitude/antics or that his program has too low of a ceiling.

I'm not sure what would get Iowa's fanbase excited about basketball again other than making a couple of serious runs in March.

Considering Davis was the last coach to take Iowa to the Sweet 16 years after Raveling players have left I would say he is a great coach if your saying he didn't recruit well.

He was a little too classy for Iowa City. He did have a PHD after all.

Fran exemplifies the attitudes of the Hok fanbase.

Technically Davis resigned at end of that season but it was well known Bowlsby wasn't going to extend his contract. Stevie Wonder was a hot commodity and Iowa was lusting for him - and yep boy, they got him.

I don't think there would be much confidence today Iowa could bring in a big name. They would have a punchers chance of getting someone that would go to the next level but in MBB there are too many options for good young coaches.

Lot cheaper to give away pizza than buy Fran out, search for a new coach.

If the season for Iowa goes like I think though, might be interesting to see where this new (temp?) AD goes with it, I think she has 'attributes' Barta did not.

They were supposed to be bad last year too and got in so I'll expect the same.

My father in law who is a huge hawk fan and my wife and I share a YTTV subscription with called us last night irate, asking why he couldn't find the Hawk game on the YTTV. I had her relay to him that Big Ten+ is not part of YTTV package. He continued to be irrationally upset, and accused me of not trying hard enough to get Big Ten+ because I am an Iowa State fan. He said if it were an Iowa State game I would go through hell or high water to get it. I had my wife tell him yeah, no ****, I'm an Iowa State fan. I am not going to pay for a Big 10+ subscription for him. I'm still not sure he understood and thinks I am purposefully withholding Big 10+ access from him. Boomers sometimes, man...
That sounds like something I would hear from numerous 25 year-old hogeyes.

Isn't it just assumed if Creighton is not an option it'll be Deveries?
