In memoriam of Brian Ferentz as Iowa's OC

But is that what most Hawk fans want, an interim AD pushing out the school's most successful and popular coach of all time? It might be the right thing to do, but I can see a bunch of fans being real upset about it.
Most successful was Evy with a national championship and two rose bowl wins in a very short time. Could maybe throw in Howard Jones for most successful with two back to back undefeated seasons.

Most popular is Hayden Fry by a longshot.

Some fans will be upset if KF was to be forced out for sure.

Kirk will not step down. His love of football and control is greater than his love of family. Beth did him a HUGE favor which allows him to hire a new coordinator without the public humiliation of firing his son. Kirk will be at Iowa as long as Parker is his defensive coordinator. If you want Kirk to retire...get rid of Parker.

So Iowa is going to go with the Nebraska strategy? You don't have a real program if you aren't paying multiple coaches.
It is unavoidable in today's landscape. ISU paid $5 million to Rhoads and another $5 million to Prohm for their buyouts. With contracts continuing to sky rocket, only expect those buyouts to keep getting worse. Look at Jimbo at Texas A&M or Brian Kelly at LSU. Like $80 million if they wanted to fire either.

I'd bet Hayden is the most popular. Some fans probably would be p*ssed but the overwhelming majority would be happy if KF decided to retire.

Nah, sorry, you're wrong on this. She's the only one who could fire or retain Brian Ferentz.

Kirk, Gary Barta, and Brian Ferentz have turned Iowa football into a national punchline. KF has had the AD and athletic department in his back pocket for 20+ years, never having to worry about anything being done with Iowa football that he didn't want done. It's become a national story how f*cked up the Iowa program is because of the nepotism. Goetz stepping up and making it clear that she's not going to be Kirk's lapdog the way Barta was is a fantastic look and a necessary step.
Not sure why anyone would disagree or dumb this post. It is solid

Since Kirk was hired Illinois has won an outright Big 10 championship, Iowa has not.

I agree with both of these. My line of thinking was, Ferentz has been Iowa's coach since '98. You've got 25+ years worth of fans who have only experienced Iowa football with Kirk Ferentz as their coach.

I'm hearing the opposite and that he isn't a happy camper with the way it went down.
Well, you can blame this all on Kirk. He (and Brian and Barta) agreed to that stupid contract. Beth made a decision about her employee. Kirk can be unhappy but she owes Kirk and Brian nothing.

Realistically, you have to be 50 years old to remember a coach that wasn't Hayden or Kirk.

That's pretty remarkable in today's world.

I think 95% of Iowa fans wanted Brian out and realized there was real chance that Kirk would retire if that happened. It’s a risk most Iowa fans were comfortable taking.

Freerents had to be hoping that EIU could win out, get to the championship game and a bowl game to bring his son back. He would use his good will with the fan base, the injuries and the invalid fair catch to give his son another shot.

"Ya, we did not reach the scoring goal but we won 9 games and went to the championship game"
That’s exactly what he was planning on. Beth knew it and knew this was optimal timing to have support.

Maybe if they're dumb. I'm sure we'll have a few down years transitioning to a new HC. Happened after Fry left too. She's going to be really good.

If/when KF leaves most fans will not realize the new division-free schedule just gave them about 2-3 extra losses every single year even if kf had stayed.

Judging by the average Iowa fan’s perception of ISU’s significantly harder schedule over the past 20 years I’m guessing maybe one in a thousand will put those pieces together. They’ll know the schedule is harder now, and hilariously will complain when they get a very typical ISU old big 12 sos…they just won’t acknowledge all those 10 win seasons were products of sos.

Personally I don't believe it but that was a go-to for a solid decade of early Ferentz era if they lost to ISU.

His teams are just very 'bleh' for the first month no matter who it is and that tends to include the B12 opener.

Yeah during ISU’s winning streak under Dan every Iowa fan said kirk’s teams improve the most so not fair they are forced to play ISU in September. Game didn’t really count.

Then in 2001 the game got moved to the last of the year because of 911 and they still lost.

Worst excuse in history of losing excuses.

With Goetz at the helm, all of these nepotistical old men are in trouble at the TOE. Fran better hope for 20 wins this season or he'll be next come March

The insane massive minutes Fran played Connor the first few years are every bit as disgusting nepotism as Brian.

By that 6th or 7th year he was a decent role player but early on he didn’t belong out there any more than Lil Lick.

Big Ten teams have almost unlimited money to hire/fire coaches going forward. If a school doesn’t already have insane facilities after the last decade they’ve been idiots. ISU doesn’t have the bottomless pit of cash for coaches like mighty northwestern or Indiana in this new world but the facilities in Ames are now insane…like every well managed fbs team should be.

Iowa was terrible for 3 of those from 98-00. I don’t think that was the excuse for those 3. Regardless, it’s dumb excuse by either side.

I wouldn't say unlimited money at all. While, they will be getting a lot of TV money moving forward, you still better be smart with how you spend it especially when it comes to coaches and buyouts. Hire a bad coach and you could be looking at a $60 million plus buyout or stuck with said bad coach for years longer than you want to reduce the buyout some. Get a couple of bad hires in a row and you would be in a lot of trouble for sure.

The Hawkeyes that are ready for a coaching change are giving me some strong Solich-at-Nebraska vibes, as in be careful what you wish for.

The next guy is almost certainly set up to fail, or at least have a very tough road. Following a legend is always very difficult, but following a legend following a legend is rare territory. With the PAC newcomers, Iowa goes from probably the 5th best B10 program 8th, and that's with their recent level of success. The fanbase is delusional - they'll forget Ferentz ever failed to win 10 games in a season and any CFP/National Championship talk regarding Iowa was almost entirely about their fake id. The SOS is likely to get far tougher going forward without the B10 West, they're not going to have 6-8 cupcakes year in and year out.
