Game Thoughts TCU

I used this video to time Abu's run. The game clock ticks to 11:36 when he crosses the TCU 49, and it ticks to 11:32 at the 11. That works out to a 4.21 s 40 yard dash or 19.4 mph.

I know this isn't olympic swiss timing, but it even with some error, that is dam fast.

I watched that play over and over, observing the hole being opened up for Sama. A thing of beauty. Really enjoying watching so may young guys play and excel. Must be great fun for them, just out of high school, seeing the field and beating up on team that was in last year's nat'l championship game.

The biggest thing I learned from Saturday's game is how much I dislike Sonny Dykes (sp?). I'm glad we've got Campbell.

Great win, but you should win with 4 INTS and you block a punt. Like I said yesterday, we still have the same problems we had in the second half against OU, we are running on first down, with LBers coming up to fill and getting stoned at the LOS or taking a loss, we refuse to repeatedly blitz, even when we were going against the TCU backup QB.

We have to start throwing the ball more on first down out of play action and we have to start running the QB more off of fakes. Many times, Rocco would be running free if he kept the ball and just turned the corner after faking it to the running back going the other way. It seems like we only try to run the QB when the defense knows we are going to run the ball and everyone is staying at home, not flowing on 3rd downs.

This offense could be very good if we would just open it up, I like our young running backs, we have a couple good receivers and TEs but none of that is going to happen if we continue to pound the ball against teams that are playing run and run blitzing on first downs
I’d like to see 5-7 plays called per game where Rocco can run the ball: RPO’s, Zone Read Option, moving the pocket more often. I don’t want him taking excessive hits in the run game or going between the tacked very often. But, he has enough juice with his running ability to keep the defense on their toes.

I havent watched the game back yet, but by far my biggest takeaway is improvement of the Oline + TE's in run blocking, and our RB's doing so much better of getting right up behind the line and then getting burst through the hole. Amazing improvement by the overall run unit.

Very concerned with the defense's run blocking. Maybe Bailey ends up a day one draft pick in a couple years, but that was an offensive line who lost an NFL pick and a 6th round senior and came out and basically parted the red sea against us play after play after play, and in space we really struggled to wrap up Bailey

Good point.

I will say through 6 games, it seems Sanders/Sama/Hansen are just better at finding the open lanes than Norton. They also seem better at making the first guy miss.

The OL retooling since Brendan Black has started last two games, and Stevo Klotz - have just been huge benefits to the run blocking game.

Love that it happened for him too. We have three very talented RBs trading minutes but I feel like Abu Sama is the guy that reminds me most of Breece and Montgomery. I’m also biased because I like seeing in-state players do well. :p

I think 2 or 3 a game would be enough to keep the defense honest. I don't want to end up like TCU last night with my starter going down on a silly QB run and having to rely on a true freshman.

As far as the criticism on Campbell on "winning in the margins" I think it is silly that people beat him up about that. He says that is the way we have to win. Well when we haven't done it, we haven't won - so he is right.

Coaches say that they have to win in the trenches. That is their goal. Sometimes the other team is better at attaining that goal and they don't win in the trenches.

Just because he highlights it as something they need to do, doesn't mean that it is stupid that he said it when the team falls short. It just shows they have work to do in that area.

I listened to Sonny's post game press conference and he didn't give one ounce of credit to Iowa State. Heck, you would never know they even played Iowa State.

Granted, TCU did a lot to beat themselves, but a losing coach should make it a point to credit their opponent, no matter how much it hurts to do that.
