49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Those are very interesting insights. Thanks for that. It's a lot of what we see too. Between the ears he seems superior. His mechanics and accuracy are very good for the most part. There is plenty enough arm strength there. He just doesn't have a rocket to throw 70 yards. But that's OK. Most QB's can't.

Other than desperation was he mostly very accurate though? Because that's what I see. Excellent mechanics and throwing accuracy. Is that what you guys mostly saw over the 4 years?
I think certainly overall he was very accurate. Don’t watch his Cheezit Bowl game although a lot of that falls into the trying to do too much category. Also had a poor enough game against Iowa one year that Campbell pulled him for a bit.
But you could immediately tell he could make his throws when they put him in to relieve someone (Zeb Noland maybe?) at Okie State. And despite a few games here and there, I think he’s probably got our best completion percentage of anyone who played much. That includes a couple of NFL backups but neither Sage Rosenfels or Seneca Wallace had as much talent around them.

Yeah he is mechanically a really good thrower. A great decision maker too. That's what I see every game for sure. He throws darts out there sometimes.

I call him Brock_Star Montana Purdy.

To me he is absolutely awesome. The best QB since Montana and Young bar none. Nobody compares in probably 20 years or more. He's outstanding at these.

* Reads pre snap
* Reads post snap
* Going quickly through progressions
* Making the right decision
* Getting the ball out quick
* Having excellent mechanics and throwing an accurate ball
* Athletic enough to scramble around to buy time to throw or get a 1st down

To me he was downgraded because of height and weight and good but not great speed. At the combine they look for a specimen. They want 6'4" 225 lbs. Can run a 4.5 40 yard dash. But none of that matters compared to processing the game and good mechanics and accurate passing.

To me he seems like a young Drew Brees. They are about the same size. Or a young Montana. Just great between the ears and really accurate mechanics.

So what was he for you? I understand he started 4 years and 46 starts? It shows in his experience. I watched him in College. But not as much as you.

IMO right now he is playing like a top 10 QB with the chance to move into the top 5. He's just phenomenal. I think he's incredibly great and thanks for sending him our way! We have a chance to win the Super Bowl now.

We named a month after him. He was all right. OK, he's probably the best QB we've ever had.

I’m not sure if this is going to come through as a video on here, but I thought I’d share the link. This is a great breakdown of every Brock Purdy pass play from the cards game - it helps explain how well Brock is actually playing. The way he is reading the defense, pre & post snap recognition, his anticipation, and accuracy are unreal. It’s honestly remarkable for any QB but especially a young qb. He truly is a special player. I credit a lot of his nfl readiness to his time at Iowa state. When I go back and watch his college film - you can see the type of system he was running and throws he was asked to consistently make were nfl caliber plays.

Hopefully you guys enjoy this breakdown. This guy is going to be a special player for years to come. The 49ers got super lucky with him and he got lucky to be in a system with that fits him with so much talent around him. It’ll really enable him to blossom into the best player he can be.

Who is this guy? Love the technical breakdown. He really knows his stuff.

LOL. So his offensive line wasn't great? He had to do his reads quickly, get the ball out quick, throw accurately and be athletic to escape the rush? Maybe that was a great training ground for him for the NFL then. Sometimes you look back and going through the fire created the forged metal that you now are looking at it. Maybe it prepared him over 4 years for the NFL and us. Because he doesn't flinch and his head and eyes see things extremely quickly. Great for us! Thanks for preparing him.
When Purdy was battling for the 3rd QB spot last summer I read that in his ISU career he had thrown something like twice as many passes as Lance and Sudfeld had combined in their college and pro careers. I knew he was going to make the roster when I saw that. He learned more and was more battle-hardened playing for the Clones than he would have been at a powerhouse like Alabama, Georgia or Ohio State.

Yes of course play and reps makes a big difference. Which is why I never understood Trey Lance who barley played but was picked on measurables. Purdy had a huge amount of experience. Which refines a player. I'm not surprised he plays like a vet. He has a lot of experience in a way. At least in College as a 4 year starter.

Honestly the Webzone is my least favorite sports site. It's grown too big or something. They have threads that go on thousands of pages and if you open it they may or may not be talking about the subject matter, and there's a ton of infighting. And now that all the newspapers are behind paywalls, the news links are a bit sketchy as well.
