*** Official IOWA STATE vs #14 Oklahoma Game(Day) Thread ***

By then it wasn't unique.

And ISU got to play two depleted/cold off a COVID pause teams, ending with an opponent that backed into the game.

ISU played some good ball but using that season as some sort of standard doesn't make sense.
I think it was the first year of having 3 loss teams in the fiesta bowl. We were a wildcard. Hard to think we’d have been selected had the B10 and P12 not canceled big parts of the season.

I agree, they are winnable. However, it seems to me that it's gong to take more than 20 points of offense to win most of them, which shouldn't be a big deal in modern football...except if you happen to have an offense-averse head coach.

OU had been averaging giving up 8.5 pts per game and we got 20. The offense has looked competent the past two weeks. I think we’ll be competitive against teams with less defensive talent. If not, then we can discuss the future. But it does no good to bury a coach 5 games into the season.

We played a P12 team with 2 losses. Plus, they aren't going to select a second P12 team to play Oregon. Finally, ISU was selected over three B10 teams with 1 or 2 losses: Northwestern, Indiana and Iowa. Between those 3 teams, they had only 1 win over a Top 25 team and that was Northwestern's win over Iowa. Meanwhile, ISU had 3 wins over Top 25 teams, and we picked up our 3rd loss in the B12 championship game. We were the clear choice for the Fiesta Bowl.

I had though Blum said at one point we were in the bottom 3 or 4 in P5, let alone our own conference.

A couple thoughts:
1. Blum is pushing for donations, so that may or may not be accurate.
2. Stats like that are so often skewed. If we're in the bottom 3 or 4 in regular fan contributions, it doesn't matter. That's not going to be what moves the needle. It's the big boosters who have always moved the needle. We're surely in the bottom end for that, but it won't be changing anytime soon.

ISU got 20 in the first half, and then the offense pretty much looked like the first two games in the second half.

They're pretty close to a major city and considerably warmer weather in general. Plus JUCO players there are quite good.
Manhattan is in the middle of nowhere. Ames is close to Des Moines. As for weather…have you ever lived in Kansas? (I have) Winters are just as brutal there as here. Tornados are even worse.

This season is demoralizing to my overall fandom. We had taken the incremental step to being able to hang with people in the conference. And now we've clearly gone backwards.
If you’re that fickle, I’m surprised you had any fandom left after 2003

Of those three items, the biggest one is access to (quantity and quality) and willingness to go after JUCOs. Coach Snyder went all in on that route, and it worked out really well for the K-State program.

Ames is quite a bit colder and has a lot more snow on average than Lawrence. All 3 schools are going to have disadvantages compared to OK & TX because of distance.

Ou has beaten us like 80 times out of 90 and people think NIL was the difference last night?

Hell OU has been paying players before it was legal. Anyone remember the cover of Sport Illustrated with Bosworth and his fancy Corvette on the cover, or the QB that came out for the 2nd half wearing the fur coat in Ames?
Heck I was happy we played a entertaining 1st half.
