*** Official IOWA STATE vs #14 Oklahoma Game(Day) Thread ***

Backups? Special teams are backups? More than 22 players see the field in a game. I’m pretty sure more than 22 different players started games last year.
Only 11 start on offense and 11 on defense. Yes other players see the field too. Only 22 are starters.

Yeah he'd make the Oline and defense better.
so the offensive line decided to make two really stupid throws that went straight to the other team, with one being a pick six and the other one giving them very short field position for an easy score? Okay, buddy.

I by no means expected us to win but did not think our defense would get toyed with all night allowing Gabriel to just camp out waiting for receivers to get open. The not playing anyone impressive is also alarming because the only teams with a pulse held Oklahoma to 28 and 20.

I definitely give Heacock the benefit of doubt because he’s been phenomenal and earned it , just frustrating we thought we had a huge offensive problem which has moved slightly forward and now the D is concerning

Just don’t have the talent we had had for n the past.

The more I reflect the more I think the D is the issue now. Offense tries and at times presses because the D can’t stop anybody. D almost gave away the OSU game. We got nothing at times and our offense is sunk before we begin

I think both are the issue this year. I’m willing to give the defense a break since they have always killed it and may be a little down on talent. Offense just has no excuse

This is missing the point but the "Good thing we took all our timeouts home with us" complaint has always been weird to me.

Im not sure why using all your timeouts equates to adequate coaching in some people's minds

Anyhow, I didn't watch basically any of this so I guess im the only winner of the day. Being on vacation whips ass
I took a class called Theory of Football taught by John Gagliardi. He said, no matter what, if you are trailing always, always save your time outs until the end of the game.

The West Virginia game from a couple years ago was the worst. They had a lousy QB, Jarret Doege, inexcusably pick us apart.
We got completely out schemed that day. They knew we made good adjustments on defense in the second half so they basically ran two seemingly completely difference offenses, one for the first half, and one for the second half.

Losing 6 starters out of 85 on scholarship doesn’t seem excessive. I think coaches know they‘ll lose players every year so it seems like a big part of their job is managing that fact.
It was when they lost them that is killer. They lost them in summer which is not enough time to recruit and recover. Couldn't even hit the portal.

I would say when the other team has superior players that is when you need to take more chances not less, because their better players will beat you if you try to go head-to-head with them.
I disagree completely. Teams with superior players can gamble on scheme and there's a chance they will get bailed out by superior athleticism. Many weaker teams go out and beat themselves by abandoning sound, fundamental football. At a minimum, make the other team beat you. If a team has better players, good coaching, and doesn't make mistakes, they should win. ISU just has to do a better job in identifying and recruiting overlooked players, developing those players, and in coaching scheme and especially execution. If a big name school does all those things just as well, they'll still win.

We’ve got a few guys hurt as well. Nikkel is a nice story getting a scholarship and all but he’s not really good enough to start. Their guys were running through us.

Meh, to the doomsayers, it's not the 1st time OU has beat us like a drum. Actually scoring 20 points in the 1st half was a good thing.

This season is demoralizing to my overall fandom. We had taken the incremental step to being able to hang with people in the conference. And now we've clearly gone backwards.

I'm pleased as a pig in mud the offense is being opened up. Too bad it wasn't for the Iowa and Ohio games. That is what was frustrating.

And not a moment too soon because I fear the scheme for defense has been made. Hope it can be adjusted because there are some fairly decent offenses yet to be played.

We’ve had senior laden teams when we’ve hung with the top teams in the conference. This is a very young team. From what I saw yesterday, I think we’ll get back there when this team gets older. But I think we definitely benefitted from that Covid year with guys sticking around longer than they normally would have. Now, we’re paying the price with an extremely young and inexperienced team.

Absolutely. And honestly it’s all plug and okay, so even though we lost 6 starters, we still have Darrell Simmons so we should have been fine in theory right?

There’s a massive difference between expecting someone to transfer/graduate, versus finding out in May that you’re losing your starting QB/RB

So, you were just fine rushing three and allowing OU to pick us apart, which lead to 50 points? ISU has to find overlooked talent because we have no choice, many 4 or 5 star recruits are not going to give us a second look.

When ISU put this defense in, we did it to get our best players on the field, but that was 8 years ago, and teams have adjusted to the defense. Our staff has to adjust the defense now to take away what teams are doing to take advantage of the defense. That means blitzing and not let the QB get comfortable in the pocket and into a rhythm, because when they do, they will toast this setup. We all have seen it over and over, the best way to beat a great QB is to attack him, hit him and put him on his ass. Make him feel that pressure and get rid of the ball quickly, hoping he will make a mistake. We were getting very little pressure from our 3 down lineman yesterday, so that means brings one or two more to speed up the QB.
