*** Official IOWA STATE vs #14 Oklahoma Game(Day) Thread ***

Yes, listening on the radio... I will be interested in watching the replay, well, 1st half anyway.

Again, not being able to see the game, I wonder if teams are beginning to figure some of the weak spots in our defense? Must give credit to OU, they've got it going offensively. The TX v OU should be interesting.

That seems like an out of conference game now.

Weak spots?

LB has been a weak spot since Rose left and the defensive line has shown little since the UNI game. There is talent in the secondary but they are making aot of mistakes and have to cover guys, routinely, for 4-5 seconds.

Even more is Heacock is not disguising anything and we routinely give insane cushions at the line. QBs can play pitch and catch with ease and the only playmaker we have is Cooper.

There is little ingenuity on either side of the ball and it shows. Then, when the talent disparity is large the schematic weaknesses are easily exploited. This game was way to easy for OU.

Coaching staff needs to look in the mirror.

Lol did you hear the news that McNamara is most likely done for the year? Just talked about it on the broadcast. They think it’s his ACL again. Nobody is tripping to anything

Did I miss the memo where he was going to do much for them?

This is missing the point but the "Good thing we took all our timeouts home with us" complaint has always been weird to me.

Im not sure why using all your timeouts equates to adequate coaching in some people's minds

Anyhow, I didn't watch basically any of this so I guess im the only winner of the day. Being on vacation whips ass

The weakness in the defense is it allows too much time for a good QB to find an open receiver down the field. Its a great defense when the team you are playing has a below average QB, but when they are decent, he will kill you.

How many times have we seen the same thing, the Baylor game a few years ago, tonight, we will see the same against UT later this year. We allow the QB to get comfortable, get into a rhythm and they toast us. It's the thing I hate most about our defensive staff, they are not aggressive enough and force the QB to hurry to throw the ball. They are playing back, bend but not break, but quality QB will destroy it just like we saw tonight.

I think it is making fun of CMC's horrible clock management over the years.

They had some lucky* deep passes where the ball was under-thrown and

1) the receiver came back to it and the two DBs just ran by or

2) the WR was trying to come back to the ball and ran into the CB who got flagged for PI.

Then they got like 4 consecutive DPI calls near the goal line right before half.

*I am not saying OU was lucky to win the game. But usually passes under thrown as badly as those were just go incomplete or get picked. Instead they were both big gains.

Not really. We had NFL talent and had a unique defensive scheme.

By then it wasn't unique.

And ISU got to play two depleted/cold off a COVID pause teams, ending with an opponent that backed into the game.

ISU played some good ball but using that season as some sort of standard doesn't make sense.

Good post. It doesn't matter how much talent you have in your secondary, and yes we have talent there despite what people may say from this game. If you don't put any pressure on the QB to get rid of the ball, you are going to get carved up.

Sometimes the other guys are just better. We had the game 21-20 despite the Pick6. Iowa State only has a chance agaist OU if we can manage the game. We can't just stand there toe to toe and slug it out. We lost the ability to manage the game with the second interception and the subsequent defensive collapse with all the penalties. OU played a near-perfect game. "We ran into a buzzsaw, Coach" - Johnny Orr

At least we don’t have to play them anymore
That's the positive of tonight. Our 7-80-2 all-time record against them probably won't get worse anytime soon.

You may or may not have prompted me to go camping next weekend.

The thing that is hard to understand is the few times we brought extra guys, we got bad throws on them. So, why not keep doing it. Bounce around, bring people from different spots on the field, get the up and then drop them off.
Right now, we are allowing the QB to sit in the pocket and just go through his reads, and if they are covered, hit the outlet on the sidelines.

I thought the offensive side of the ball looked great the first half, why, because we stopped trying to run it up the middle, and started getting it outside and we were throwing the ball down the field. I have no reason why we stopped throwing down field the 2nd half, but the offense went back into a shell, running up the middle and that quick out which suck. It's a dangerous pass if underthrown and even if it's there, you get 2-4 yards. At least the ran a screen pass tonight that picked up some good yards, which was nice to see.

The more I reflect the more I think the D is the issue now. Offense tries and at times presses because the D can’t stop anybody. D almost gave away the OSU game. We got nothing at times and our offense is sunk before we begin

The proof is in the pudding. On defense, ISU has been very good statistically for years. Bringing more pressure all the time increases the odds of giving up a big play. Our strategy has been to allow the short passes in order to stop the run and big plays and then bring pressure occasionally to keep the offense off-balance. Judging by the stats, I'd say it's working. When the other team has sufficiently superior players, they have a good chance to win in spite of coaching. There's nothing that says they HAVE to make mistakes.
