*** Official IOWA STATE vs #14 Oklahoma Game(Day) Thread ***

How many times have we seen this defense get picked apart over the past couple of years? TCU, Baylor, OU and others. I like the defense playing teams that do not have good QB's, but when you face one like we did tonight, if you do not pressure him, he will pick you apart, which he did.

I would say when the other team has superior players that is when you need to take more chances not less, because their better players will beat you if you try to go head-to-head with them. When they have better players, you have to get mistakes or force them, or you have no chance to win the game. How did we beat OU a few years ago, we did because Rattler started making mistakes, we never gave the OU QB tonight that opportunity because we didn't force the issue like OU did to our guy.
The West Virginia game from a couple years ago was the worst. They had a lousy QB, Jarret Doege, inexcusably pick us apart.

The more I reflect the more I think the D is the issue now. Offense tries and at times presses because the D can’t stop anybody. D almost gave away the OSU game. We got nothing at times and our offense is sunk before we begin
It’s crazy how we have gone full circle all the sudden where we are going to need the offense to win games and much more aggressive offensive play calling therefore bringing in turnover risks.

I had flushed that game, but we did the same thing there. Wasn't that the game that Hall scored, and they said he fumbled into the endzone and WV recovered?

In fairness, it’s easier to make adjustments when you have way better players…
I literally have no idea how good Oklahomas offense is after tonight because I can’t imagine any other team will let Gabriel sit in a lawn chair until someone gets open. It’s as bad of gameplan defensively I have seen in the Campbell era.

Tough to argue when we’ve failed to hit the BF (25 points) in 13 straight losses. We haven’t scored over 24 in a loss in almost two full years.

This is a TERRIBLE sign and why he just needs to ignore it. Every time Campbell reacts to this garbage, he’s going to hear ten times as many comments the next week. The fact that he got baited into it twice in three weeks is only going to make him a bigger target and increase the pressure he’s already proved he can’t handle.
It’s not a good look. It’s not the look of a coach that is in control of his team’s direction or his own emotions.

I mean sure, but they also lost six starters from the LAST PLACE TEAM IN THE BIG 12. Everyone throws that stat around, but we weren’t the ‘85 Bears last season. If we shouldn’t expect them to get better until next year, that will be two and a half lost seasons in a row when players can only play for four year.

I guess I just don’t really see the same signs of optimism that some here seem to be noticing. I am just bummed this is the state the program is in after a promising start to the decade.
Losing six starters on any team and any sport makes a difference.

Maybe this game along with last year's TCU game will finally end the myth that Campbell is good in big games.

Final score is not ideal by any means although OU is a very complete team this year.

Even though we got blanked in the second half, which is less than ideal, there are still some positives. Overall, I liked our offensive game plan. The first half was the most fun I've had watching our offense in a long time, save you the pick 6 and the other INT.

Defense is concerning. Yes, OU has one of the best offenses in the country, but we could not get off the field when it mattered. We saw defensive issues last week against OSU too.

I'd give today a C if I were grading our performance. Stuff that was positive but also lots to work on.

We do have some winnable games ahead of us. We just need a good game plan and of course execution.

Go Cylones!

Those last 7 minutes before halftime were brutal. We looked like a young team. OU scores a TD to go up 28-20 with 6:49 till halftime.

Then on our next play we have two guys in motion, putting us at 1st and 15 from our own 20. Two incomplete passes later and the punt gets blocked and recovered in tbe endzone for a safety. 30-20

ISU commits a face mask on OU's first play, but is able to hold them to a 46 yard FG. 33-20

Next drive ISU throws a pick to give OU great field position with 2 minutes to halftime. ISU commits 3 penalties on the drive and they end up scoring a TD with 7 seconds left. 40-20

In 6 minutes and 49 seconds we went from playing them even to down almost 3 scores.

Then OU gets the ball after halftime and scores again.

It’s not always coaching. I coach two soccer teams. One is currently undefeated…the other hasn’t won a game. Am I just a phenomenal coach for the one team and a garbage coach for the other? Maybe. But I think players matter. This ISU team is young. Campbell might not always pull the right strings, but winning in Oklahoma with this team was a long-shot. I was hopeful that perhaps they could be exposed because they hadn’t played anyone too impressive…but they look legit.

yep the end of the first half completely deflated all the work the offense had done after the pick 6 to start the game...and of course our defense couldn't stop anything tonight

Losing 6 starters out of 85 on scholarship doesn’t seem excessive. I think coaches know they‘ll lose players every year so it seems like a big part of their job is managing that fact.
There are only 22 kids that can start. The rest are back ups. Losing 6 of 22 makes a difference.

I by no means expected us to win but did not think our defense would get toyed with all night allowing Gabriel to just camp out waiting for receivers to get open. The not playing anyone impressive is also alarming because the only teams with a pulse held Oklahoma to 28 and 20.

I definitely give Heacock the benefit of doubt because he’s been phenomenal and earned it , just frustrating we thought we had a huge offensive problem which has moved slightly forward and now the D is concerning
