ISU Gambling Megathread

Looking at the ones reported, does this mean that no women at any university in Iowa ever placed a bet?
The number would likely not be zero, according to this.

Phooey, that may not be the right article, but numbers of college athletes betting can be projected from surveys, and the number is scary high for men AND women.

We are all working through the grieving process on this one. I for one have made some dumb comments on the thread as I work through this issue. I have now accepted what has happened and have chose to live with it. But I offer a guide to help our Cyclone brothers and sisters also trying to figure out this horrible situation…

Denial - I think most people are past this stage now that a lot of details are coming out. I don’t hear anyone still saying, “Well, at least they didn’t bet on ISU football games….” We now know the facts. It happened and it wasn’t good.

Anger - These posts will be along the lines of “How are these people so dumb?”, “CMC has lost control”, or the snarky “5 star culture, eh?”. I think we have to remind these people how great the program has been the last few years and hope they remember what a great run we’re on.

Bargaining - These people are in the camp that believes “This is a national problem that everyone else is hiding from”, “I bet school X won’t be investigated”, and “It’s so stupid that some state bureaucrats had it out for us”. They may very well be correct, but they need time to heal. The Ronnie Harmon jokes have been a great way to diffuse the situation and remind everyone that history repeats itself.

Depression - A lot of Cyclone fans seem to be at this stage. The “Bet the under for total wins this season” crowd. I suggest they be reminded that the roster has been built with young, quality recruits that are ready to get some playing time. Maybe they could go back through the games from last year and remember where they were at when dekkers threw that gut-wrenching interception or incomplete pass to kill drive after drive.

Acceptance - Congratualtions! You made it. You are ready to start the football season following the team you love, in a conference that is kicking ***, and in a year that we get to celebrate ISU’s greatest athlete.

Let’s go!!!

Randy Pete summed the situation up as well as it can be done.

"Say what you want about rules that prohibit student-athletes from betting on NCAA-sanctioned sports. Whatever your belief, players knew the rules, yet they decided to put themselves ahead of their teammates, the university that pays for their education, and the loyal fans who cheer for them.

They did that with not one iota of respect for the program’s culture that Campbell and his staff worked so hard to build."

I rip on RP any chance I get for his questions etc. but props to him on this imo.

I've really enjoyed reading multiple people argue that since sports betting in states like Alabama, Texas, etc. is actually ILLEGAL it won't be investigated like it shouldn't be or something, but since its legal in Iowa it should be investigated. Either way, these guys are idiots for betting on college sports as a college sports athlete.

I won't hold my breath until another state launches a similar investigation.

There's been no cases announced in those states not because it's illegal there and hence SHOULDN'T happen, but because it CAN'T happen -- geolocation prevents it.

It was a very young team that lost a lot of close games. Could have been so much better with just a play or two every game. Starting over at QB with a lot of inexperience is going to be tough, but if other aspects step up from last year, I think we'll be fine.

Part of me is very concerned that 25% of our starters are gone including QB, RB, TE, OL, and DL and part of me is saying “those starters won 4 games last year” and think we’ll be fine.

Serious question- is it possible this scandal will cost CMC his job? Heads usually roll and once the admin starts feeling heat, they cave and people start resigning.

I’m not sure if or how anyone feels we are even remotely close to that. The head coach from across the state has had a rhabdo scandal, racism scandal, discrimination scandal, and gambling scandal and he’s still the head coach.

This is the first scandal in 8 years of the Matt Campbell era. And it stemmed from something outside of his control.
