Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

If Big 10 picks up 4 and Big 12 picks up 4, that means Fox and Espn will pay for 8, but not all 10 together. What did Fox and ESPN accomplish by basically picking up the PAC 10 minus two? I realize OSU and WSU not worth much, but was it worth all the hassle? That’s why I think Arizona comes and Pac stays together minus UA and Colorado IMHO.
As we pointed out a few pages ago.

The deal on the table for the PAC was roughly 200M per year. And not acceptable.
To be equal to the B12 they would need 320M per year.

Fox and ESPN will probably pick who they want and where, for less than 200M.
And then it will be split among partners Fox, NBC, and CBS in the B1G, and Fox and ESPN in the B12.
So instead of having to bid in the area of 300M for an entire conference in a separate contract. The are getting the schools they want, where they want for much less out of their pocket.

And then it is one less conference to have to deal and negotiate with moving forward. It is win, win, win for the media partners.

This makes me doubt that we are going to see all these schools get in to the B1G or B12. That ends up being a lot of work for the TV networks just to cut loose OSU and WSU. Who wants to pay B1G money for Cal or Stanford?

It’s cheaper and you engage more eyeballs. Theoretically, late night becomes much more popular. They have been airing the late time slot and, relatively speaking, nobody watches. Combining that time zone with the central and to a lesser extent eastern time zones, you have more interest in that late time slot.

Can someone explain the Utah hate to me? Is it because they dropped 68 on us that one time? I don’t really get it otherwise. I’d much rather have them over BYU

Because not only do the Utah fans not want to have anything to do with the Big 12, they've insulted the conference every step of the way for the last two years - parroting Cal's "truck stop schools" reference.

In other words, Utah fans would rather die clinging to Pac 12 pride than actually have a future in the Big 12.

**** them.

Seems like 99% of their fans claim MWC would be far better than Big 12 and they’re the main snobs saying B12 is “Truck Stop Conference”.

They hate BYU so bad they’ve created an alternate reality…until yesterday when they came groveling to join that truck stop.

In this alternate fantasy Utah is exactly like LA, San Fran and Seattle and nothing like Kansas. It’s exactly that ridiculous.

Most has to do with their twitter fans. They have been ripping the big 12 and just being asses. I even saw one fan today say they should turn down the big 12 since they think the big ten would pick them up.

Imagine if Iowa had more national appeal and a relatively recent national title but then slipped out of the B1G for whatever reason. Then we had a run of success and got an invitation to the B1G, where we immediately became one of the league’s most successful teams while Iowa was in the MAC.

Now say Iowa gets a promotion to a league a tier below ours. And then finally imagine the B1G implodes with Ohio State and Michigan going to the SEC and other schools jumping ship as well.

Would you be thrilled with the idea of taking a lifeboat in Iowa’s conference? You’d think we finally got permanent position in front of them and we’re giving that up.

It’s not a perfect analogy but it’s close to Utah/BYU. Utah fans see themselves as above BYU, which is a recent role reversal, and they think it’s not fair that they’d have to give that up and join BYU’s conference right now.

The new Big 12 deal is 20M each from ESPN and ~12M each from Fox.

The current Pac-12 deal is 250M total from ESPN and Fox. Assuming a 50/50 split, that's ~10.4M per team from Fox.

If Fox is all-out on the Pac-12 going forward, Fox only needs to come up with an additional ~1.6M for each Pac-12 school that jumps to the Big 12.

Sorry, this makes no sense to me. The current offer from ESPN and FOX for PAC was $0. Whatever they might be paying for this last year is immaterial. They did not bid on the new contract.

BY negotiated a great contract that allowed the Big 12 to add up to two P5 teams and receive a full $32 million from ESPN/FOX. The ESPN contract allowed another 2 teams at $20 million. FOX was not committed to an additional payout for going beyond two.

Both ESPN and FOX indicated to the Big 12 they would prefer we stop at two, but recent developments make four more likely. But it is not an increment of $1.5 million for FOX. They were not interested in paying anything for ASU/UU. Good news for us if FOX is over a barrel.

Well, that is the big shoe dropping there.

If they take 2 or 4, then all the M4 are Big12 bound. Bummer. I was really hoping for Oregon...

Maybe the B1G will surprise and take UW and Stanford and stop there. But doubt it.
I’ve been to Duck games (ISU buddy moved there after graduation) and I don’t think they’d be a good long term fit. Buddy and I would go see a game in Autzen and wear ISU colors and receive derision and aggression. Ok, sure, I’m not wearing green, but do you have to be angry about it to the point that you call us out and make it an issue?? It happened on several occasions. We’re like WTF, we just like the game day experience and we like our team so how hard it is to deal w/ two numb nuts spending money in your stadium? I can’t imagine calling out a fan (from another conference) in Trice. I would be like “dude, thanks for coming to see our badass tailgate experience - come again w/ more friends”.

So, long story short, Oregon (fans, administration, cheerleaders, etc) would always feel they deserved the Big10 and would bring a lot of distain - they’d always be looking to bolt - like Texas.

There have been rumors that there was a deal offered from ESPN to the Pac for 200M, but got deny/pulled.

Point neither of the networks were willing to pony up the required amount for an entire conference. Especially when the Pac was looking for more than 300M per year.

I am sure they saw the same thing we saw, and expected the Pac to fall apart. And when it did they could take the teams for pennies on the dollar compared to bidding on the entire conf alone. If it didnt fall apart they were willing to just let it go or bid on it for scraps.

You can expect they were willing to pay similar to what they are paying now....in which they will get the new members to the B1G and B12 for a similar amount.

So in the end, they got the Pac schools they wanted, to the conferences they want, for way less than what they would have to pay to the Pac separate as a separate contract. Then in the future they dont have to bid with another conference and can consolidate their money between less conferences.

Finally they are getting the teams and splitting that money between more partners, so in the end they arent paying that much each comparative.

I see that as totally different. Teams not in the same conference, but have a rivalry. If a Bama fan came to Trice wearing crimson, would you give them a hard time. Of course not. We have no rivalry with the Tide. I’d say ‘thanks for coming to our awesome tailgate and I’d love to hear the story of why you’re here - also, let me get you a beer’.

Both examples are incredibly childish. That’s how they’ve acted.

Winning the PAC isn't that difficult. They also lost both there NY6 bowl games. They are overrated.
Winning any P5 conference isn’t easy. It’s a body of work and a season long grind. OU has won the Big12 many times and lost in several NY6/playoff games. So, winning the Big12 is easy then too? I would disagree with that viewpoint. Fans aside, I say kudos - taking down traditional contenders and putting your stamp on a conference and saying we’re here now - deal w/ it - is pretty bad ass.
