Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Big Ten only adds members if it, at minimum, keeps the per school payout the same. I haven't heard that adding Oregon and Washington would do that. And who in their right mind thinks adding Cal and Stanford would.

Right now the Big Ten is projected to distribute $80M per year at the low end. I don't see adding those four as a minimum break even.
The Big10 deal is in the $60-65M range, the other money is CFP and NCAA Hoops money.

The Big10 won't add the other Pac12 schools at full price. Just like they didn't add Nebraska, Maryland and Rutgers at full price. At this point, they can probably get Pac12 schools at less than $30M/year. Remember in a couple years the CFP monies will probably be over $20M annually for Big10, SEC, ACC and Big12 schools. Compared to G5 schools might make $5M, if the power conferences don't shut them out.

Hell with Stanford's endowment, the Big10 might make Stanford pay them! ;)

Let ESPN take all of the risk and FSU just skates away with the reward.

People keep saying things like this and I don't get it -- unless the ESPN/SEC media contract says otherwise (i.e. pro rata), ESPN is under no obligation to pay more just because the SEC adds more teams. The same holds true for the B1G, I would assume. Do we know if they have pro rata clauses in their media contracts?

One thing is clear, ESPN in particular has put themselves pretty far out over their financial skis with these conference media contracts. I don't think there's much appetite at Disney to fork over more SEC pro rata money just to make FSU and Clemson happy.

That's exactly why FSU is getting outright vocal now. They see a potential landing spot in the B10 being eaten up.

I keep wondering if there's a scenario where the Big 12 ends up with UCF and Miami.

I would've thought Miami would be perfect for B10 because they have parallels with USC but every time I post it everybody says it's absurd. Could SEC add all three big Florida brands and would Florida try to block that?

Seems there's a non-impossible chance Big 12 gets Miami someday.

They mortally wounded the PAC 12 so they were only worth $20 million in a streaming deal. Absolutely a mortal blow.

Big 12 will add 4 Corners. Arizona first. ASU and Utah will be on the clock. They will come. Nowhere else to go. Washington and Oregon to B1G partial shares. Old PAC 12 CFP spot is now an At Large. Big 12 with the best basketball league in the Country and will be very desirable as a good fun competitive football league. Going into the next negotiation for media we have eliminated a competitor.
We should add Oregon state and Washington state instead. Id lie and say it’s to add increased media presence in the Pacific Northwest and to add an additional time zone to the xonference but it’s really cuz I think it’d be utterly hysterical to leave Utah and Arizona state holding the bag.

That's not how it works, at all.

The ACC can simply say no.

There's an exit fee, yes. On top of that, the ACC owns the IP rights for the tv media of the respective conference members even if a member chooses to leave. The ACC has the right to say no to sell those rights back. Even billionaires like Taylor Swift have been unable to buy their rights back when they wanted to.
I dont think he means it like there is just a buy out clause. I think what he means is after a lot of negotiations there will be a price they can pay/agree to that lets them out.

Similar to OuT paying 100M.

Most of us have always believed that price would be too high to leave in the near future for anyone in the ACC. And most believe it will take a lot of negotiations, lawsuits to get to that point.

I could see them saying they plan to leave at the end of the contract, then start negotiations to make it happen sooner, just as OuT did. Then come to a compromise for how much and how many years early they can leave.

Those thinking all they have to do is say "we out" and leave next year, are dreaming. They are going to figure out where they can go, and how soon, then they are going to work out something to leave early, otherwise they will be in the ACC until the end of the contract.

ESPN had agreed to deliver funds for their rights no matter if they turn out to be profitable or not. If the conference got zero ratings ESPN would still be on the hook to pay.

Now that FSU thinks they're underpaid on a deal they signed it's time to just bail?

No idea from the SEC side for pro rata on expansion, but if I'm ESPN I'm not looking to give FSU a $70mil raise when I already have them.

If Fox takes them to the B1G then I want compensation for losing that property

Maybe this has been discussed earlier, but why would the Big 10 bring in Oregon and Washington now? They didn't think it was a good idea last year, what changed in the meantime?

If anything with FSU doing all they can to blow up the ACC it would make more sense for the Big 10 to wait to see what happens with the ACC before doing anything with the Pac 12.
Scaring ACC schools (VA and UNC) imo

The B1G didn’t want the negative perception of killing the PAC in one swoop, so they waited.

Also, the PAC crumbling around Oregon and Washington gives the B1G more leverage to bring them in at an even steeper discount.

Just my two cents.

certainly possible, but I wonder just how big the Big 10 wants to get. With them already being at 16, do you take Washington now when FSU, Clemson, Miami, and UNC might be on the table next year?

If the Big 10 wants to go to 24 teams, then sure take Oregon and Washington and then wait for the ACC to fall apart.

I don't think the Big 10 wants to expand to that many teams and I also think FSU is negotiating through the media with the ACC. If they were serious about leaving, you don't broadcast it like this. These deals aren't made in public.

I get that WSU, OSU, etc from the Pac are scared right now. But the most frustrated in all of this has to be UCONN. They went from being mildly attractive to washed-up has-been in a matter of 48 hours... again.
