Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

GK's world must be an absolute ****show right now. He had a good idea of what the media rights deal would be with 10 teams in the conference. And those numbers were probably not as good as the B12's numbers. With Colorado leaving the media rights numbers have changed (for the worse) and he would have to negotiate a deal with 9 teams. If AZ leaves, the numbers change again. And it is very doubtful that OR and WA will stay in the conference.

GK boxed himself in by stating that the PAC12 would not expand until the media rights deal was finalized. But we know that the PAC12 will need backfill with new schools (SDSU, SMU, Boise St., etc) to maintain at least 10 schools to have a conference championship game (the B12 knows that situation). This again will change the media rights numbers with G5 schools being added. Requirements to get into the College Football Playoffs may impose requirements for a minimum number of schools within a conference. I can see this moving to 12 or 14 schools since most conferences have grown to that size.

Arizona is coming at some point; they’re the next domino. I’ve been trying to work out the possible Oregon backdrop in my head. BigXII wants Oregon, and I want Oregon.

BY is brilliant at marketing. He pushes the envelope in exciting ways. He throws out splashy ideas that other conferences would not entertain. One of the possible carrots I’ve seen mentioned to possibly entice Oregon/Nike is a BigXII conference-wide affiliation with Nike. (KU/adidas is the obvious hurdle there). Would the conference be able to make up some of the money gap with B10/SEC, if the BigXII sold its naming rights to Nike? The “Nike Conference” may sound better to recruits than the “BigXII conference that OUT left”, I don’t know. (This may have been discussed ad nauseum, and I’d prefer to avoid whether we’d all want that or not.)

My question is this: Does Oregon even want that (sharing Nike’s benefits with its conference), or does Nike tell Oregon what to do?

Let me ask you a question. Would you have been alright with the Longhorn Conference? Because that's essentially what you're saying. I would rather see ISU go to the MAC than allow another school to run roughshod over the conference again. I'd be happy with Oregon, but only as an equal member.

Interesting that he chose 2016 as the start point. A year when UW and UU were both ranked in the top 10. Cant imagine why their games got prime slots and were so highly rated... and 3 win AZ was not so highly rated...

I mean, he isn't wrong that those are the higher draws - "man lands on moon". But i would love to see all the data and get a better idea of how pronounced the differences are. At least he only used regular season games so CCG and big bowls wouldnt skew it further, kinda surprised he didnt!

Were the games on the Pac-12 network included? Those are poor!

Is that due solely on geography? I mean I can see geography to an extent, but it’s not like Memphis is going to help the B12 in Tennessee and/or Arkansas. At least UCONN opens up New England and some NYC.

I figure if the B12 wants to be a national conference then we might as well go all in.
1. Geography (UConn is on a huge island)
2. Big 12 bowl tie in city (though bowls get more meaningless as years go by)
3. Very good basketball.
4. Rabid basketball fans.
5. Decent football fans.
6. Decent size city for recruiting.
7. Fed Ex founder (Fred Smith) with big money to throw around
8. Fans are all in for a Big 12 invite. UConn fans aren't all in.

St. Johns and Syracuse are just as popular or more popular in NYC than UConn. UConn is 3 hours away from NYC.

Idk, but he did control for network - tho not timeslot. There is also a difference between the noon game vs the 9pm game. Which he did NOT control for.
He has the Pac Network itself in his analysis? The Pac 12 Network, like the ACC and SEC Networks, doesn't track or publish ratings. The Big 10 Network tracks.

It will happen sooner than that. BY assured that a quick decision by announcing we are going to take one more. That was a message to the other 3 corner schools. ONE is going to get invited. Oregon and Washington will be taken if they commit to the GOR. And they really have no choice. Both could thrive in the Big 12. B1G is going to wait for ND. Wouldn’t have thought I would pass on ASU and Utah. But spots are limited.
Unless ESPN & FOX have zero desire to own 8 Big12 conference games, I am not buying the stop at 14.

We talk about a P2 from a conference standpoint, but I feel like ESPN & FOX want a P2 from a TV standpoint. So getting Arizona, Utah and ASU in Big12 limits opportunities for Apple, Amazon, CBS/Paramount or NBC/Peacock to gain a foothold in college sports.

From a FOX standpoint, the end of the Pac12 likely means ORWA goes to Big10 at a big discount.

If Big 12 wants to add UConn, do it for basketball only. Then make a push to add Gonzaga for basketball only.

NYC market for CFB is not good. Most people in the market will only watch the playoffs
I gotta a compromise. Invite UConn as full member in hoops and maybe other sports.

But give them the ND treatment. Let UConn be independent, but schedule 4 Big12 non-con games against UConn annually. If their FB program emerges by 2031, give them full membership.
