Going to Seattle for work in August; thinking about some personal days in Alaska for Halibut fishing.

Went to Alaska for Halibut fishing out of Seward about 5 years ago and I wasn't impressed and frankly disappointed.

Does anyone have any experience/suggestions on a solid guided fishing trip out of Alaska?

TIA!!!

Taylor Charters out of Gustavus AK. It’s about a 20 minute flight from Juneau AK on Alaskan airline.

Not sure if they do a day or 2 type trip or not , we’ve always done a full week. But we limit out each day on halibut and salmon.

I went a few years ago out of Homer....All the boats went one direction and our guide (a very young guy) took us another direction. As soon as my bait hit the ocean floor I had a fish on. Was like reeling in a office desk from 200 feet...My arms and back have never been so exhausted....Didn't seem like much of a sport....Salmon fishing in the river was much more fun although the Halibut is great eating

August is also halibut and salmon season in WA, and there are many charters both on the Pacific and in Puget Sound. We used Highliner Charters out of Anacortes, WA (about 75 miles N-NW of Seattle) a few years ago. Sometimes you can also drop shrimp and crab pots too. I know the shrimp (Pacific spot prawns) have been showing up in local fish markets lately.

This is awesome and didn’t even consider going out of SeaTac area - thank you!

Much appreciated and will consider TC when I better plan a full trip to Alaska as opposed to this potential impromptu hair up my butt idea.

Looks like a great place!

I’m suprised you didn’t enjoy fishing out of Homer. I went fishing there years ago and we nailed fish right when we threw our lines.

Homer was also the first town I ever bought a beer and they didn’t even ID me. I was 14 years old and looked 12 and they gave no *****. My buddy and I were up there with my mom helping clean up Prince William sound after the Exon Valdez crash. We were just joking when we ordered and our waitress just brought them out.

Surprised you didn't have luck out of Homer. I lived in Alaska 3 years and never had a problem catching Halibut out of any port. I'd take some light gear and catch some rockfish. Better than halibut imo and funner to catch.

Rockfish is fun. Doesn’t feel like a barn door while reeling in.

This is an odd numbered year, which means the pink salmon will be running too. They only run every other year, but in huge numbers. They are smaller and people here look down on them compared to King/Chinook and Coho because they aren't quite as good eating, but still damn good to an Iowa boy.

The halibut down here tend to run smaller than Alaska, but they all taste amazing.

I made a mistake. 2019 trip was out of Seward. Over 2 hr trip (which was expected) out into the waters and a group of 6 caught 4 halibut; nothing over 40lbs.

I get it, sometimes that’s how fishing goes. I’ve fished Canadian fresh waters for almost 30 yrs.

Kingfisher charters based in Sitka. Fully guided 10 hrs a day. Our group caught several over 100 lbs with the largest of 191. They also get you into a variety of fish while trying to catch the halibut. It is a completely first class operation if you're looking for an everything included trip.

Makes you want to go to Alaska "just for the halibut"...
