Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

The Big 12 is stepping up the pressure with smoke and mirrors. I am saying this in a good way though.

The news about the Big 12 stopping at 14. If Arizona comes at 14 and Washington, Oregon, Utah, or Arizona State say they are in, we going to say no?

The August 1st deadline for Colorado seemed weird too. What were we going to do if the deadline went, invite UConn and Gonzaga immediately?

Don't care, it worked! That is all that matters now.

Right! There will come a day where your Vandy's, Missouri's, Rutgers of the world could be dropped from a conference so the big names can earn more money.
You know, I think it’s going to be funny when the top programs go off on their own and tell the Vandys and Rutgers to pound sand.

In all their majestic “it just means more” egotism, they forget every game requires a loser as well as a winner. When the Arkansases and the South Carolinas and the Michigan States start seeing 3-9, 4-8 every year with their upside being maaaaybe a 6-6 season once in a while, they ain’t gonna be happy with that.

Upon hearing that Colorada was re-joining the Big 12, the Husker Board is becoming nostalgic for their old conference again. Here are a few of their comments...

"I would love to be back in the Big 12, particularly if CU and if somehow OU would stay. Damn, I miss those games. I’ve hated being in the BIG since we joined. Other than everyone’s standard hatred for Iowa, I don’t give a **** about any BIG teams."

"Most don't really give a **** about Iowa either. That "standard hatred" is contrived and forced."

"Put me down for wishing we were back in the B12. I loathe our current situation."

"4 to 5 teams within a day's drive, lots of different styles of football, and no 1-2 teams dominating the conference, I know it will never happen in a rich man's world, but this sounds like a fun conference to be in."

"We'd be the only blue blood plus some pretty good cultural fit and some old rivalries restored. Pretty spare top to bottom though without Texas and OU in there."

"It is shocking just how bad teams in the Big Ten are but for some reason, fans pretend like they are tough games."

"Reality - no conference in human history has seen as much simultaneous losing and sexual abuse of its students & athletes as the B1G"

"But remember - we played Minnesota a grand total of four times between 1975 and 2010 - for people who grew up in the Big 8, playing Minnesota (like a lot of Big 10 teams) is basically like playing a dull non-conference opponent - you want Nebraska to win, but that's it."

"We play a B1G schedule and cash B1G checks. That's as far as it goes. Many others seem to want us to become uber-woke student diddlers (a B1G school). We are much, much better than that."

"Nebraska would have a better shot at winning a conference championship in football and making the playoffs. I think about Texas and OU joining the SEC. Some of their fans are already lamenting the likelihood that both schools could be looking at seasons where they finish in the middle of the pack. The competition in the SEC (and Big 10) at the top level is fierce and only getting tougher. So how bad would it be to take OU's place in the Big 12? The new staff already recruits Texas very well. It will never happen though...."

"You're not getting the point of what past history and identity meant.. KU was rarely ever going to beat NU.. we had a lot of history against that team, (and others).. and that was partly why we were successful. We had a history of beating those teams, and they knew they were going to get beat. That paid dividends to the team every year. In the current conference, it's now the other way around.. that's what has happened with the mismanagement of the program by taking it to another conference."

"Many of the memories of the KU and KSU games were because there were always seats available at those stadiums. Those were de facto home games from 1960 to when Snyder got things rolling for KSU and Mangino for KU. Same with Iowa St."

"Frost was only able to beat teams from one single P5 conference - the weak B1G - during his tenure. If we were still in the Big 12 we may not have won a single conference game last year."

The B10 is currently at 16 and reportedly has spots reserved for ND, UNC, VA and perhaps Stanford. That doesn’t leave any room for Washington and Oregon unless the B10 is going to expand all the way to 24 teams. If that's their ultimate plan, why wouldn't the B10 go ahead and take Washington and Oregon now when both schools are in such a vulnerable position?
They likely just havent made that decision yet, on 20 vs 24. Theres a lot of flux around media rights and how streaming, linear et al is changing. They might want to just sit tight a few years and see how it shakes out.

The B1G is in a position where they dont HAVE to make moves. Teams will always join them when called.

Is the contract even finalized yet for the BIG? I heard they were still trying to finish all the details.

If they add OU and UW, where are they going to put the extra 15 games a year, all the exclusive windows are taken by Fox, CBS, and NBC? The only revenue they would add would be BTN subscriptions in Oregon and Seattle, which could be fairly significant, but I have no idea how much.
Who's to say if they add UO and UW the B1G wouldn't try bringing in Apple or Amazon or some other streamer that's not currently a partner to add coverage and help offset the gap?

I think it’s just a formality of waiting for PAC to provide a final media deal. Since they’ve been PAC members for so long, they need that last justification for leaving. And weak media numbers would be that push and justification for the regents to accept Arizona to leave.

And they’ve probably given a deadline to see those numbers now the CU has made their move. Could be 1 day, could be a week, could be two weeks, but I don’t see it being longer than two weeks away.

I don't disagree on the first part; talking heads follow the money. Big XII doesn't get to write the narrative, the B10 does.

With Arizona to BigXII, FOX/B10 has additional leverage against UO/Wash to reduce their shares because of the impending PAC implosion. This whole thing is in flux. We'll see where this goes.
Slight correction, imo. Fox writes the narrative.

UConn as an expansion candidate seems like smoke and mirrors too. They are so far away, football is below mediocre, and they just got back with the Big East with most of their old rivals and they are happy about it. They don't really carry NYC and ESPN doesn't give UConn special treatment being nearby.

UConn has two things that would be attractive - one is basketball and two is to take off them from an ACC expansion candidate.

I would rather hold off on UConn but continue to do a Big East/Big 12 Challenge and to collaborate more with UConn and/or Big East on these special basketball projects Yormark cooks up.

The big ten is obviously no a loser in this situation but it would have been less messy to just add ou/uw when they added the LA schools.

It likely would've meant a little less money though and I feel like with the SEC being so dominant on the field, the optics of having the biggest deal are really important to that league.

We have remember that they’ve gone/are going through a leadership change. People have different ideas and plans. Plans take time to implement. Warren had a vision of just the LA schools for now. The new leadership may honor that plan or they may have a different plan. The different plan would take time to get in place and go in to motion. They might have missed a window and we may benefit. It’s impossible to say at this point.

I assume if the Big 12 told OU/WA that there would be a huge exit fee for them to jump to the B1G from the Big 12... OU/WA would just turn down the deal and not come to the Big 12, right?
Plus, even if the b1g doesn’t want them (which I think is becoming more obvious every week) do we really want two teams in our conference who think they’re better than everybody else? I thought we were getting away from that finally.

After spending way too much time on the Utah board I am a lot more concerned about Utah becoming the next Texas than I am Oregon and Washington.
It would be weirder imo. Texas ego without Texas money or population.

Agree that UConn is likely a smokescreen at this point with the B12 using them as leverage to get ORWA and/or the 4Cs on board. BB is reportedly included in the new B12 TV with FB so the value of UConn will come moreso in 2031 when the BB contract will supposedly be split from FB and if the B12 expands beyond 16 at that point in time.

Had no clue there are that many smart Husker fans. That first guy was outstanding.

Thanks for the round up of comments. I enjoyed reading about the sadness that has enveloped the Husker fans with not a word about the money they receive. I find that interesting.
