Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

New Mountain West is going to be:

Hawaii
Nevada
New Mexico
San Jose
Utah State
UTEP
Wyoming

Idaho
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota State
South Dakota State

That's what I'm thinking too...although I wonder if Idaho and New Mexico State just both done with FBS level for good. I know SDSU (dakota version) has performed well but do they have the kind of support NDSU and Montana schools have?

NDSU and Montana schools seem better set up for success than several MWC/WAC/MAC schools over the years.

The crazy thing in watching these G5 conferences is how fast some of the Sun Belt teams can go from terrible to competitive in the past few years as opposed to early Sun Belt where the whole conference was pretty bad.

Ore State and WSU are going to fit geographically better with any combination of these PAC/MWC than they ever did in the Pac.

I drove through Utah recently and checked out all three stadiums. Utah St campus, stadium and town all more impressive looking than I'd have guessed.

Well this takes the wind out of the sales a little bit. Don't make the same mistake the PAC did a couple of years ago. If you have an opportunity for the kill shot and can get UW, O, and UA then take it. It is true that losing only Colorado doesn't hurt PAC that bad and situations can change drastically by next round of realignment. If we only end up with UCONN and Colorado out of this it will be a huge missed opportunity.

This is probably more about pressing Arizona into making the decision to jump than it is saying the Big 12 won't take Oregon and Washington to get to 16.

I know the BXII needs to play nice with ESPN, but the network signed a contract allowing 4 schools pro rata. ESPN saying "please, Disney cut our funding, dont take Oregon and Washington right now" is ********
So possibly pissoff the media partners now and hope they don't remember it in 5 years when the Big 12 is looking for another payday?

Third time I have posted this in 24 hours, but that was over 1,000 posts ago. The longer post details why without UO or UW, only 2 teams add up. But with UO or UW, then you can make 4 work with the prorata. Although at this point, maybe 50/50 on ASU vs UW vs UConn for a potential 4th spot.

TLDR; I think the two most likely outcomes are:
1) Colorado and Arizona only
OR
2) Colorado, Oregon, Arizona, and #4

For the 4th team ASU is my guess. UW will wait for B1G. Utah is being a-holes, plus a 2nd team from Arizona (pop 7.5M) makes a lot more sense than a 2nd team from Utah (pop 3M)).

South Dakota State is probably better funded that NDSU at this point. New football stadium, totally renovated arena, new wrestling facility, new track facility, new indoor performance center in the last 10 years.

I get the ISU angst over Uconn. In football, Uconn isnt good. So, the question is, since Uconn has inroads--big inroads in the ne, is getting those markets for hoops offset the fact the big 12 may have to pass on a ACC team down the road?

I think BY gets to make that call. what has he done so far to make people doubt him?

Colo plus Uconn to 14 is a huge win. no, it doesnt break the pac, but i think it puts the big 12 in the markets BY wants.

Im still hoping for arz, oregon and washington--that's the hr, but colo plus uconn is an rbi double.

Sounds like the PERFECT every other year FCS opponent for ISU to have that always easy tune up game against. Let's sign a 20 year deal. SDSU or UNI every year from now until the next century, what can go wrong?

What little I heard from a "source" is backed up by some other things mid day yesterday and I have a big feeling that this whole UConn thing is something ESPN really loves. BY might like it a little but I think it's an ESPN lever among other things.

I'm sure everyone prefers the best 3-5 remaining actual sports fandoms in the Pac, but I think ESPN really likes UConn as the cherry on top and the fact that the Big 12 would easily be the greatest basketball conference in history. It would be more dominant in hoops than the SEC is in football, currently I'd say B12 hoops and SEC football are kind of equal in terms of computer ranking/results.

I'd rather have Pitt, NCSU, or VT before louisville
I don't disagree. I look at SEC potentially going to 20, where do you think they're going to go. FSU & Clemson. I doubt they want three in Florida. Best bets are NCSt and VT. I don't think those two will be available, but hell I never thought we'd be talking about Oregon so who knows. Louisville is still a solid add to our conference.

What's worse for the SEC, having 3 schools in Florida or letting the B10 get a foothold there? I'd think Miami or FSU would be very high on the B10's priority list. Assuming 20 is their goal number (I have doubts about making it to 24 for either the B10 or SEC), I have got to think the B10's ranking looks like:
  1. ND
  2. ND's +1 (if it's needed to get the deal done)
  3. FSU or Miami
  4. UNC
  5. UVA
  6. The other of Miami or FSU
  7. Duke

UCONN angst is because they're bad at football and a group of 5.

  • They were a BCS conference school before the Big East died.
  • They have 5 bball championships recently, no one else can claim that level of recent success.
  • NYC market. I think brands are more important, but its been clear that Uconn has a larger presence in NYC than Rutgers.
  • Eastern school that could help lure ACC schools when that collapses.
UCONN is about potential, not about what they are today. Clearly we want teams that are already Power 5 first, but if we must take a group of 5 Uconn isn't so terrible. Yormark likes them for what they can be, not what they are. Also, we are the best Bball conference today, but the B1G just added UCLA/USC. If they also add Virginia, Miami, ND, and/or UNC, they have a lot of blue bloods to claim top status. Look beyond where we are today. Look beyond where UCONN is today.
