Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

The longer we sit here without a deal the better deal we're going to get! Nobody wants us but we somehow have leverage. Makes total sense if you don't think about it lol

Reality is probably more like "the deal can only get better, becasue right now it's terrible".

A universe of speculation, but the #1 piece of evidence for me is this: if the money was good, it would be done by now. Ergo, the money must not be that good.

Perhaps then it's about conference contraction rather than expansion.

Or probably more likely, a whole new entity made up of only the most watched teams.

That's my guess as well. That's where you likely see the big brands break off into their own P1 entity and the rest in the P2.

I know everything is about the present, but I'm really intrigued by what the next round of media deals will be like.

Sports is the only remaining content where people watch through commercial breaks - thus the big media deals. But sports are also declining in some ways and in some areas. Will advertisers pay the same or higher for fewer eyeballs because it's still the only option, or will they scale back? At some point it's going to hit the limits of the ROI. That to me is when you see the next big round of realignment.

The OSU's of the world are fine sharing revenue equally with teams nowhere near their level as long as the revenue keeps growing overall.When the overall revenue stops going up for the conferences is when we start seeing the big names talk about unequal revenue sharing (so their revenue continues to grow) or ultimately doing their own thing with each other to keep their overall revenue growing.

For real. Every day that passes with no deal gives more leverage to the networks.

The PAC has a deadline (end of current deal) and NEEDS a deal to happen. The networks don't. Not really sure how anyone could buy the line of thinking that networks will magically pay more money later on out of the goodness of their hearts...

I'm sure they've had several deals/offers on the table for a while. Just none that the PAC 12 will accept or like.

The OSU's of the world are fine sharing revenue equally with teams nowhere near their level as long as the revenue keeps growing overall.When the overall revenue stops going up for the conferences is when we start seeing the big names talk about unequal revenue sharing (so their revenue continues to grow) or ultimately doing their own thing with each other to keep their overall revenue growing.

Eventually it will be a single superleague. Consolidation. But then the other 40-50 teams can just get back to plain old college football.

This is what it all hinges on. ND is wanting $75 mill/year from NBC, that's quite a bump. If NBC gives it to them, there's no way ND joins a conference anytime soon unless their path to the CFP is blocked, which is doubtful.

Probably the only thing that would block their path is playing Iowa.

instead of media rights controlling it, how bout make the best possible alignment for the fans which in turn would create the most revenue for tv deals.

could easily do regional map of 5 or 6 regions. minimal travel and max fan interaction / interest. 6 regions of 20 teams would basically work.

my rough outline w/o much thought:

West of Nebraska is split into a "North West" and "South West"
Upper Midwest
Texas / South Midwest
Ohio Valley
Northeast
Southeast

top x amount of teams from each region go to a playoff - some regions will have more teams than others prorate it for eligible playoff teams.

this isn't rocket science. biggest rivalries and fan interaction happens with nearby surrounding schools.

follow the $ and it will lead you to things that don't make sense because billionaires want more $ and power.
