Crazy Golf Stories

I took up golf late -- like in my late 20s. I bought a set of cheapy golf clubs from Wal-Mart and went to play nine holes at the local course. I had the day off, and there was hardly anyone on the course. I teed off on the first hole, and as I was walking down a guy in a cart came up from the ninth hole and was heading for the club house. It turned out to be someone who graduated a few years ahead of me in high school. He stopped and we talked, He then said he would play a couple of holes with me.

The next hole was a par 3 and I attempted to tee off, but I topped it and it dribbled four feet in front of me. The guy said, "You are standing too far away from the ball. Move closer, swing easy and let the club do the work."

So I did, and I'll be damned. It's still -- to this day -- the best shot I have ever hit. It went high and straight. The ball landed about 4 inches from the cup and rolled in.

I looked at the guy who was smiling and he said, "Easy game, isn't it?"

Of course I couldn't count it as a hole-in-one because it was a mulligan and I only played nine holes.

A hole in one is official on a 9 hole round. Just not on a second shot. Still fun though.

Not really a crazy story at all, but a few weeks ago a group of us were playing a 9 hole course and played it twice to get in 18 total. During both rounds the group behind us hit into us on the exact same hole, which is a shorter par 4 where you can't see the green.

After the second time they catch us a few holes later and ask if they hit into us and one of my buddies hardly let him finish before saying "no worries." Well this dude then proceeds to tell us "we are playing for money" and wants to know how the shot he hit straight ended up off to the right because he thought we messed with his ball. It bounced to the right because it hit one of our carts. Not really a big deal but this guy was a douche about it after he hit into us.....and I don't give a **** if you are playing for money.
Not being able to see the green is one thing, but if someone hits into our group once I don't worry about it. If they do it again and can see we are there I am either hitting or throwing their ball into the rough or driving my cart over it if they already are in the rough.

Before my wedding 32 years ago a NY buddy of mine I met in the Navy came back for the wedding. We played a round at Grandview and needless to say he had never played. He was using his 1 wood even out in the fairway. He hit a 1 wood on the par3 4th hole 90 yards. It came with in an inch of a hole in one.

My best friend and I were golfing at Grandview years later and in the foursome ahead of us included Iowa Amateur Champion Mike McCoy. They all hit amazing first shots at the par 4 1st hole. We waited a bit for them to clear the green but you can’t tell because of the hill. My friend hit a bomb and me not so much. We went looking for his ball by the green and couldn’t find it. McCoy holler’s back to check the hole. He said the ball hit his foot as he was putting and went in. We apologized for hitting and asked if it was a hole in one. McCoy said it absolutely was a hole in one and not to apologize for a great shot.
I have played several courses with blind drives and many of them have a tall flag that you reset when the coast is clear. I wish all courses did this.

Grandview used to have a spot on the tee box with a mirror on a telephone pole for the first and tenth holes.

Indian Creek CC in Marion has a red beacon on a pole on one hole for that purpose.

Not crazy. more funny. Two weeks ago at my local course on men's night. One of the gentlemen I play with comes in wearing a new Titleist hat he found on the side of the road. He brought it home and his wife cleaned it up for him. He seemed pretty excited about his find telling everyone the story of his new Titleist hat. Only thing is it didn't say Titleist. It was one of those hats that says titties using the Titleist font. I had to point it out to him and I still don't think he believed me even after he took it off to look at it.Screenshot_20230731_222603_Chrome.jpg
He didn't wear it last week.

LOL I'm surprised his wife didn't catch that and shoot it down.

Honestly, if your not looking for it, you look right past it. It's not glaringly obvious. What made me notice was someone else that's a nice hat, (they also didn't notice) so i look at it as hes telling his story and side of the hat said something weird that I can't remember. Not Pro V1 or something that an actual Titleist hat would say. Then I see the front and tell him you know that doesnt say titleist right? And he asks me what does it say. I tell him to take it off and look and it I still had to spell ot out for him. He didn't seem to care at the time but as I said he didn't wear it the next week.
