I took up golf late -- like in my late 20s. I bought a set of cheapy golf clubs from Wal-Mart and went to play nine holes at the local course. I had the day off, and there was hardly anyone on the course. I teed off on the first hole, and as I was walking down a guy in a cart came up from the ninth hole and was heading for the club house. It turned out to be someone who graduated a few years ahead of me in high school. He stopped and we talked, He then said he would play a couple of holes with me.
The next hole was a par 3 and I attempted to tee off, but I topped it and it dribbled four feet in front of me. The guy said, "You are standing too far away from the ball. Move closer, swing easy and let the club do the work."
So I did, and I'll be damned. It's still -- to this day -- the best shot I have ever hit. It went high and straight. The ball landed about 4 inches from the cup and rolled in.
I looked at the guy who was smiling and he said, "Easy game, isn't it?"
Of course I couldn't count it as a hole-in-one because it was a mulligan and I only played nine holes.
