Property Access for Tree Removal

Neighbor is cutting down his dead ash tree by himself. He's a contractor so has some tools etc to do it. I'm lucky, none of the tree overhangs my property and he accessed his backyard through his property. It does overhang to his neighbor behind him so it will be interesting. Makes for fun having coffee and watching from my backyard.

Might be OK if he takes his time and does it in little bits.
That's what I told him. He does tend to hurry and get ahead of himself! If he does that here there could be problems. He's not using any personal protective gear.

I helped guide him in backing his equipment into his backyard. He took down a 6' section of his fence and backed that boom bucket trailer and his big Ford F350 through it and into his backyard. Pretty good trick getting that in there.

A hard hat, gloves and steel toes should be a must. Don't suppose he is tethered to the bucket?

It's Monday morning, what could go wrong.
Oh no.

Well, a lot could go wrong actually, even to an experienced chain saw person. If you don't make the right cut, the branch can twist and come down in a completely different way than you were hoping.

The fact that the guy is not wearing protective gear, is not tethered, etc., does not give me great confidence. Hope it works out for the best and he lives to fight another day!

No worries, I'm sure he is coordinated enough to jump when the cherry picker tips overs.

And the jumping is pretty easy normally. But here, he would have to be very fast! Then it's the landing that is difficult.

For some reason I'm thinking of Darwin's evolution.

Don't get me started on my realtor neighbor who has an open compost pile in her backyard or the neighbor down the street that burns their garbage in their backyard!!

Are you actually in a fair sized town ( over5000). If so I'm surprised about the burning of garbage.

Years ago, we lived next to a newly married couple who had bought their first home. They were wonderful people and neighbors. However, like most first-time buyers, they didn't have much for expendable income and tended to use "cheap" as the deciding factor in their home projects.

They had a slowly dying maple tree in their back yard that was of decent size; I'd say 30 to 40 ft tall. They got a quote for $500 from a professional. The tree sat between their house and the power lines. These were also narrow lots and they had houses on the three lot lines next to the this tree. $500 seemed like a bargain to me. To them, it was a fortune.

She had a coworker who "grew up on a farm" who agreed to cut down the tree for free. One morning, I was making my way to the garage to run to the store and saw a woman up in their tree. She seemed to be cutting limbs indiscriminately. She was wearing shorts and a tank top with no ladder or safety harness.

"Your friend is making me nervous." I said.
"I know, I'm just trying not to watch." said the neighbor.

I drove to the store about 10 minutes away where I got a call from my wife "So, there's an ambulance next door..."

Turns out the woman had her husband tie a rope to a large limb and pull on it as she cut. When she cut it, the limb swung back and nailed her in the thigh, cutting all the way down to bone. She was lucky it didn't knock her out of the tree she was standing in, about 20 ft off the ground. She got a ride to the ER and many stitches.

They hired the professional company the next day.

TLDR; Don't DIY tree removal.

@BoxsterCy, post #187, You are the slyboot! :D

Don't worry, I had to look that up! Great word really. LOL

Edit: I forgot to include the quote, LOL I was thinking more like screw back in the section of fence he took out, in order to get in. I am bad.

I had a medium size ash tree and an extra stump removed for $1500 a few days ago by MJ's Tree Service which is located in Johnston. They also trimmed up a smaller tree whose branches had grown over the property line into a grumpy neighbors yard for no extra charge.

The entire job took about 3 hours and they left the yard cleaner than when they arrived.

The neatest thing was we asked for an estimate on Monday and they completed the job on Thursday. The owner said he rarely schedules more than a week out. When I asked him why, he said it's because he doesn't have to. He said he never has to worry about not having enough work to do.

Anyway, I highly recommend this company if you need a big tree removed.

I know around CR finding one that isn't scheduled out for 2-4+ weeks is difficult.

My mom had one in her front lawn so I grabbed a chain saw and started working my way up. It looked like a messed up palm tree when I finished. A few days later I tied a barn rope in one end and drove a pickup until right. Dropped it right in the street. Made for easier clean up. Unless it’s your first tree, it’s not terrible unless you have buildings all around the canopy and fall length of it.

Update?

We must know! LOL
Well, he got the whole thing cut down, finished about an hour ago. He left about eight foot of the trunk still standing. He says that he's going to have a tree carver come in and carve the trunk into a flying eagle statute. He was cutting that thing down while it was 90 degrees out and blazing sun with no shade on him. I haven't decided whether the guy is a nut or not.

Chuckle.......Ya, I've noticed those loose boards popping out. However, it's his fence so I was hoping that he'd notice them and fix them. He pressure washed some of the fence yesterday and I don't think he even noticed the bad boards!
