Jamie Pollard on KXNO today

They did similar for Scheman and Hilton, you can tell the north entrance to hilton is the nicer looking entrance.

I think it was more that it made sense to have a courtyard between Stephens and Fisher. Their entrances face each other.

It's definitely different for "adult" shows: two areas on ground and first floor, usually, with water, soda, beer, wine, sometimes coffee/cappuccino, popcorn and occasionally candy, I think. Two people at each area.

Also to keep parking in one "main" area to be more efficient, at least for the three north buildings.

Listening to the interview right now. I don't think I've seen anyone mention his comments on Big 12 Mexico. He said that the basketball game played in Mexico City will be a non-conference game, so it won't count towards the conference standings (and won't be taking away a conference season home game). He also said that there will be at least a couple other Big 12 matchups in Arlington at the same time that will count as non-conference games, between teams that are otherwise only scheduled to play one conference game. I think that's a great idea, given the fact that we're losing the double round robin in conference play.

My theory- JP wants/needs a concert and convention venue for CyTown. That will either be a renovated CY Stephens and Scheman, or they will be bulldozed and replaced. My guess is renovations will be way cheaper and that is what will happen. Just can't pay for it right now. PLUS - there is always a chance they can weasel some of the money out of the university/BoR for maintenance or upgrades, so hang on to that chance as long as possible.

The number of acts that perform in Ames during the school year has to be waaaay below average for a city/school of it's size. Hilton is too expensive to rent out and there's really nothing besides it in the 500-12,000 seat capacity (i.e. up and comers or bigger names).

The Live Nations venue opens in Waukee in November and is already lining up some good shows. Along with the Horizons Event Center in Clive, they're demonstrating there is a demand.

If you build it, they will come.
 
I'm not going to go back and find the origin of the conversation around the Iowa State Center, but I think there were a few comments early on in the thread that seemed to imply that Pollard basically said he hated the design and architecture of C.Y. Stephens, Scheman, and Fisher. That's not even close to what he said. He basically just said the facts--those facilities have had underinvestment for a long time and need money put into them for updates and renovations to be more usable and more attractive for events. Not that they need to be replaced completely.

The most negative thing he said was that the buildings weren't inviting/appealing from the outside, compared to the bridge (lighted), Stark (lighted) and eventually Hilton (lighted exterior). A cold/dark feeling between the stadium and Lincoln Way.

Which is true.

The BOR gave UNI a big, fat NO on help with the Dome, so I wouldn't hold your breath on that one. Gotta protect that state surplus...:rolleyes:

Yeah, I think, though, that just the Hilton renovations will help with that a lot by itself, though, since the other buildings are set back further from University Boulevard. That being said, at least with C.Y. Stephens I imagine they could do some simple lighting improvements that would help a lot, given its unique design. (I'm imagining cardinal and gold lighting on the exterior similar to the proposed Hilton renovation.)

Well when you build the buildings oriented so everybody only sees the rear end of it when approaching - dumpsters and all, they're going to look pretty bad. They were great for their day (from the North) and still look pretty timeless (from the North) but inside are rundown and gross (not just from the North).
 
"The New York Philharmonic Orchestra opened Stephens Auditorium in the fall of 1969 with a five-performance, week-long festival." No slouch programming there. I saw Harry Chapin and George Thorogood. Here are some more of the historical acts there: DR Stephens
Heck, renovate it, perimeter light it, promote it. Acts will return. It could complement daytime football with classy night time entertainment.

It reminds me a bit of the Paramount in CR, just in layout anyway. Its obviously MUCH bigger, and it is more plain - nothing can touch the Paramount's century old fancy-ness.

But if two ex-cons can fill up the Palace Hotel ballroom, surely CY Stephens can thrive again...

I worked at an historically significant Army Base (civil war era massive limestone buildings and grand architecture). The laws say they must be maintained. The amount of money available for maintenance for your Army real property (real estate) is an absolute joke. It's not just a Iowa or University issue. It universal and international.

Davenport building collapse, anyone?

As it currently stands the building is completely insignificant. It's in total disrepair, and probably the biggest event they have their each year is a bunch of little kid dance recitals.

You may not like what Pollard has to say about the building or his feelings on it but it was completely left for dead before he got control of it and now there is a chance it could be at least a little refurbished.
