Speed camera

someone reviews the video and decides to issue a ticket. why is the personal touch of a violation that important?
It's not, but it's a simple liberty. There's other things like if the owner isn't driving and has to go through the hassle when the ticket shows up in the mail. As mentioned I typically do 78 in 70s but on plenty of drives between KC and DSM when there's no traffic I'll bump that up to 83 or so. I don't see it any different than driving across South Dakota with the 80 limit as long as there isn't traffic around. Speed cameras don't do anything, officers patrolling at least make people pay attention/think about they're driving.

Otherwise it would violate the constitutional right to face your accuser
Come on…. You’re better than this. That’s criminal law.

Adding why not this response to parking tickets for whom you don’t meet the accuser?

Adding again… is the accuser not the municipality? And you wouldn’t meet them in a court of law?

Wait a minute…. If you get a parking ticket and you didn’t park the car… isn’t that a ‘hassle’ too? Please go on about simple liberty… what does that mean? And how does it fit a civil fine?

These are the same things as parking tickets.

Yes, that's criminal law, which is why they chose to make this a civil offense that doesn't go on your record.

Where did I say that?

Ultimately, the point of speed limits is supposed to be to get drivers to drive slower in areas where higher speed may be unsafe.

Cameras don't really do that very well. By the time people are 'caught' by them they're weeks past it even happening. Cops are at least marginally better at this because they don't just slow down the person they pull over, they cause other drivers who see them to slow down (its also why public announcements of traffic enforcement efforts are helpful even if it means they arent surprising anyone). But ultimately the best way to get people to drive the speed you want is to change the conditions of the road.

Unfortunately the limits aren't always set with safety being the only goal. Sometimes the speed limit is just arbitrarily set by politicians without regard to the actual ability of the roadway to handle higher speeds safely. Sometimes the speed limit is set purely with the goal of generating revenue.

After paying an $80 fine a few weeks ago, I am definitely paying more attention to my speed than I was before.

While I am sure there are places where speed limits are artificially low, the vast majority of miles have a reasonable speed limit. Plus, it's a simple rule to follow, so I just get irritated when people whine about it so much.

While police pulling people over might have a more immediate impact, the volume of people getting caught by cameras has a bigger impact overall.

So the can’t face your accuser therefore anti-US constitution is BS.

Should they make parking tickets criminal?

Should be. As it sits, traffic cameras are no better than banditry
Can you articulate why is should be? I’m guessing you are against increasing funding for speed trap cops, correct? Why must speeding be done in person?

Some municipalities require permits for toilet installs/replacements. If an empty box for a new toilet is seen outside on your curb, you get a photo and a mailed fine.

Cameras don't catch drunks and distracted drivers, two things I believe to be way more dangerous. This is a straight up money grab. Don't civil infractions go to the municipality while criminal fines go to state?
