Realignment Megathread (All The Moves)

Problem is I'm sure any media deal they sign will be contingent on the teams that are in the conference stay in the conference. So any deal they sign will be worthless once teams start leaving.
If that is the case, then the Pac 12 will not be getting a media deal, because no school is going to blindly sign away their GOR, without knowing the terms of the deal beforehand. Just like any contract, there will be language in it that tells how much money the league loses or gains by how many teams it has, and who those teams are.

My guess is inflation, which has been rampant the last couple years.;)

A little more serious. My guess is they look at the $20M amount as media pricing 10 years ago and 2023 pricing should be much higher and why GK was promising Presidents $40M last year.

But it’s a market, and as I noted earlier the Big12 timed it perfectly. Now things have changed in the market obviously. So right now, with where the market appears to be, what makes them think this?

Was just driving home and KC sports radio 810 was interviewing a Colorado sports radio host. His opinion was that everything he hears from his CU contacts is that CU is leaving. Deion is fully supportive of move.

So that is his two cents.

I feel the Big12 realignment balloon has lost its air. That there will be no movement from the PAC to our league.

What do you guys think. Is all of this hot air or are we in for a surprise this summer?
Hot air bs. Nothing will happen. P12 is using B12to gain n media attention

The Pac12 is currently going to be at 10 schools after this season, losing USC and UCLA, one can conclude that SDSU and SMU have been told they are going to be the two replacement schools for the two leaving. So, telling the MWC that they are leaving next year, before the end of the month is going to save them around 15 million dollars. SDSU will play in the MWC conference this year, just as planned, and then after their TV deal is finished both schools will be announced as the two new members of the P12.

No way Oregon and Washington sign a long term GOR of more than 5 to 6 years. What Colorado or Arizona do will not affect SDSU and SMU joining the league at all, they then become the 9th and 10th members as opposed to the 11th and 12.
That may be, but I'm skeptical that SDSU or SMU are really additive to the PAC with the 10 current members. The PAC is having an issue finding linear outlets for the games they do have for a dollar figure everyone can live with. Adding more content doesn't do anything to help that. That said, adding 1 school that barely anyone watches in an entirely new time zone is better than adding 1 school that barely anyone watches in the same time zone as 6/10 current schools (or 8/10 depending on the month). Even at a drastically reduced share, adding SDSU and SMU to get to 12 doesn't do anything to address their primary problem.

The conversation entirely changes if they lose 1-2 schools. They've got to stay at 10 members to have a conference title game. I think SMU probably gets the call if they lose 1 school, SDSU gets a call if they lose a second.

Edit: Forgot this but no way the PAC adds anyone before or after the media deal. The adds happen at the same time the deal gets done.

I couldn't even tell you if YTTV has Ion or CW. 100% for real I don't think I've ever watched those channels.

Both are on YTTV I believe.

I've never watched Ion, but CW is on OTA in just about every market. It'd probably be better for them than streaming from a visibility standpoint.

Its mostly been known for superhero shows (Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl) and dramas aimed towards a younger set. I watched it for the arrowverse and shows like The 100 and iZombie a few years ago, but since their streaming deal with Netflix fell off so has their content. They're down to just a few scripted series left, and in desperate need of something to fill airtime.

So what exactly defines ‘linear’ in terms of sports broadcasting? Anything available OTA or that is commonly included in most Live TV streaming services, cable pkgs, or satellite services? I thought it referred strictly to FOX, NBC, CBS, ABC.

Throw ESPN in there and that’s right

Linear would be any network that generally broadcasts on a set schedule instead of being geared towards watching shows whenever. So it would include OTA networks as well as your traditional cable\satellite networks. If it would fit on a 'guide' it is a linear channel.

Often 'streaming' has been used as a substitute for non-linear in these discussions because the traditional streaming platforms (Netflix, Amazon, etc) were non-linear, but obviously you have things like YTTV\Hulu Live\etc that are streamers for linear channels now.

I hope the PAC survives and is on something called ion tv. that laugh would be better than getting any of the 4 corner schools.

coach to recruit: the game is on at 11:00 pm Wednesday night on Ion TV, right after Gunsmoke.

I had never heard of ION before all this.

They should go with the Green Acres channel. Oh wait, that is the Green Acres Channel.

Linear is anything that offers programming at set times vs. on-demand. So linear includes NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, USA, ESPN, ESPN2, U, TNT/TBS, CW, etc., etc.

OTA are stations available Over The Air and can be accessed using rabbit ears antennae. So OTA would be ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, WB, Local .2/.3, public access, etc.

On Demand would be Netflix, Prime, ESPN+, Hulu+: mainly subscription platforms

I have always thought the main difference was capacity. ESPN only 3 linear channels (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU) on most cable, satellite, streaming platforms. So it can only show 3 games at once. Whereas on their ESPN+ platform, they can essentially show unlimited games on once.

I think we’re gonna see a road game in Boulder in the foreseeable future.

I don’t think asking for a discount is insane. These are almost always negotiated down and/or over more time.
I kinda agree that asking for a discount is insane. What incentive do they have to not get every penny possible, it’s not like their media deal is going to go up.
