Unclaimed Property

Just a PSA. I saw something recently about this website and had a couple unclaimed balances hanging out. I don’t think a lot of people know this is out there but every state has one. I found one for me in Iowa and Illinois.

Here's what I don't get. I have unclaimed cash from ny insurance company.

Those ******* have my address and an agent that could give me a call.

No idea how they could miss me

I didn't find anything for me, but I did find both my brother (it had his current address listed) and his daughter. I also found something for my BIL. I don't think these companies or governement entities try to find people very hard at all. It is almost like they get to keep the money if the owner doesn't claim it...

I check this periodically. Ended up with a little bit from an old checking account after my grandparents passed away. It's nice that the state has a service like this to make it easy.

The money is literally turned over to the state by law so it's probably a matter of laziness, not the expectation of keeping the money.

But in many cases it's just years, sometimes decades, old and contact info is out of date or incorrect.

I see two claims for me but they are under 100. I let them keep the change.

It's extremely easy to complete the claim.. my wife did one a couple weeks ago. Takes maybe 2 minutes to fill out their form and a check came in the mail literally 2 days later.

Certainly they can get more complicated. If you've moved, if you're filing on behalf of an estate, etc. But yeah, generally it's pretty easy.

The form is easy enough. The required documents are more PIA than it is worth. Imagine starting an account with an online bank IN 2023 and they immediately hand over the incentive offered to the Kim Reaper instead of the account holder. WTF?!?

I have found over half a dozen of them for friends and neighbors between the Iowa and Minnesota sites. Half of them have been the current name and address for the person.

Mine were both from old addresses (one a different state) and it took about 30 seconds each. I can imagine it does get complicated if the balance isn’t listed under your name and SSN.

It’s really just filling out name, current address, email and SSN. Then I got an email saying the check is on the way.

So we agree then? Some are out of date, and laziness probably why these companies don't reach out to individuals? It's easier to just turn it over to the state and let them handle it.
