Statistically what went wrong last night

We were out-rebounded 49-32. Which is disgraceful in itself. I don't know how many offensive rebounds and second chance points KSU had, but if my memory is correct, those numbers were considerable. We don't have the offensive power to give the opponent more than one shot at the basket.

Or responsible for good shot selection, ball movement, clock management, teaching proper rebounding, blocking out, or player execution and mental readiness. Nope, pretty much just all players.

Coach is like a CEO... he plays a part in all of it and should be influencing every part of it.

I still support Greg... and actually think I am seeing some signs of improvement, but to say coaching is not part of the reason we are not playing well and not winning winnable games is plain ignorance.
It's hard to rebound when his offense has the entire team running down court as soon as the ball is shot. That's not an offense, it's line drills.

That was by design...difference between defensive and offensive rebounding...Plus we were concerned with Clemente getting out in transition and rightfully so..

I hate to say it, but I feel like we are playing to our level of competition...maybe it's a home/road thing. Anyway, we play terrible in the winnable games...Just difficult to understand.

I think that is exactly it. We always play to the level of the opponent.

I think the thing that really hit me last nite was how they played disciplined for the first 35 minutes or so, but the last 5 minutes K-State made a few baskets and that discipline went right out the window. Suddenly every time we brought the ball down court the first person that touched the ball had to launch something just short of "desperation-like," and rarely waited to get the good shot off. McD was burning time outs left and right trying to get the team settled down, but to no avail. You can coach a team as much as you want in practice and you can direct them as much as you want on the court doing the game, but there's only so much a coach can do when the players either refuse or are incapable of sticking to the game plan.

There is a very fine line between winning and losing. There are times when that line looks like it is miles away, and there are times when it looks like we are ready to cross it.

I am going to cite observations and not statistics, although going 1-16 last night in a key portion of the game was a killer. Starting with guard play, I think DG honestly gives it all he has. But DG is so much slower than the average Big12 or D-I guards. Many times when he attempts to dribble penetrate, the hands of those guarding him and those giving ball side help swat it away, and he loses possession. I will give him kudo's for many times he is capable of setting up his opponent and getting by him for a layup, but the risk/reward with that seems to be awfully high.

That being said, DG is the best guard we have. We desperately need another point guard, and a shooting guard as well. Petie plays hard, no one can fault him for that, but he just doesn't have the physical tools it takes to compete in the Big 12 night after night.

Brackens is one heck of a player, and getting better. Craig not only is good, he plays hard night after night. Maybe his stats don't always show his talent, but boy is he good. He is in my opinion the most improved player and maybe the MVP of the BIg 12. He hustles, and he wants to win. He isn't out there for himself, that is seen in his face. We are very fortunate to have Craig.

Hamilton is getting better, but I would venture to guess, and I hope I am wrong, that he will get to a certain point and probably level off. He isn't very quick, and his vertical is somewhat limited. Saturday in the game against OU, twice I saw a ball come off the rim towards him high, and he jumped for it, but Griffin was behind him and literally was a foot higher than him. Hamilton had him boxed out, he just physically can't jump as high.

Lucca is a good kid. He just can't find that shooting touch, and I think an awful lot of that has to do with hands in his face or defenders bodying up against him. Not very often does he have a free range to fire. When he does, I like his odds. But rarely is he uncontested.

We just don't have any difference makers. I feel bad for Mac because of all the circumstances that have happened since he came, and I won't discuss that because it has been bantered around before in here. But it is too bad. But the bottom line is this group of kids collectively right now don't think they can win. I feel if they could get a couple of wins in a row, and steal one on the road somewhere, it might cause the mental turnaround it is going to take to get back in this thing. Confidence is a huge thing. When you have it, you are almost invincible. When you don't, you start believing the worst is going to happen to you.

In closing, I will say this. I rarely post because I don't offer much else to discuss, but I would implore the true Cyclone fans not to give up on this team. I would rather have Coach Mac then Frank Martin any day of the week. If that's what it takes to win, then give me average teams. I am offended by that guys way of coaching, and I sure as heck wouldn't want to take my 10 year old son to a game and sit behind him, or alot of other coaches in this league. Mac is a good man. He has won before, and he will win again. He needs to ctach a break, and he needs to recruit a couple of impact players. The thing about basketball, unlike football, is 2-3 kids can change the entire aura of a team.

I will back this team no matter what. If you are on here and being critical but never have played college sports, step back and ask yourself if you personally could do what you are asking others to do, even if God gave you the talent. It's easy to complain, but it's another to find resolve and fix it.

Good luck Mac and this years Clones.

Statistics help determine your strength and weaknesses. Our biggest problem is we are not a strong team at the guard position. When they put on defensive pressure on our guards we struggle. Our guards are not quick enough to penetrate or chose not to penetrate and dish off. I'm not saying our players don't work hard, I'm saying they are limited on their skills and are doing the best they can. Until we get quicker guards with great ball handling skills we will continue to struggle at that position.

Lucca is not as good as Rashon Clark dribbling the ball up the court.

We are a slow passing team. We think, we think, we pass. If we are slow, then we need to pass the ball much slicker. We had some nice entry passes for Oklahoma, but then it disappeared last night. The one thing we could do is to pass the ball much faster. Are we capabale of doing that? I sdo not know. DG is a poiju nt guard but the others posing as guards are not helping him enough. This is what happens when you play slow and deliberate. You play right into the dfefenses hands. Maybe Greg should just let them play a game they will probably lose anyway.

Yeah...Frustration

we are so worried about getting back on D that we don't send anyone to the boards. Conversely, we play very slow so the other team sends everyone because they know we won't run and gun on them. Losing Clark and Johnson hurts because we dont have a "deep threat" instant highlight maker.

Didn't Martin say that they knew they could send 3-4 to the offensive glass because he knew we couldn't get out and run? Thats not good...

I ask because against teams that their strength is in there gaurds...Why don't we just go with two point guards. Nothing against Petey and/or Lucca, but we would get a lot quicker...Maybe rebounding becomes an issue (but it was already an issue last night).

I trust McDermott is playing the right guys. Buckley struggled when he was in the game yesterday too so I don't know if he was the answer or not.

However I've mailed in the season so in my opinion those young guys should be getting a lot more minutes to help the team prepare for next year. If we're going to lose by 15 anyway we might as well prep for next year.

I've said from the start of the season that we are not a good rebounding team...If we are not a good rebounding team on defense; what makes people think that sending more guys for an offense rebound is a good idea against a transition team? I don't mind the talk of getting out coached, but I would like to see reasoning behind it.

Pretty much a carbon copy of the OU game, except the discipline lasted a minute or two longer.

When the pressure is on, people resort to whatever their instincts/training happen to be. The military sends kids through boot camp to mold their instincts and responses to certain situations. Maybe ISU needs to adopt a boot-camp style. Something is not right. Other Big 12 teams like KU are young, and those kids seem to stick with their gameplan pretty well...

That's my point, not trying to be rude...but you are coming across as not understanding the difference.
If I ddin't know the difference i would let you beat me to death. The fact that it is by design to not get offensive rebounds is why I think the offense is a joke. I assumed by my post you'd know I was referring to offensive boards alone.

Looking more like the recruitiment of HB will save his job in the future. DG is handling the ball a bunch just like Mike taylor. Mike was being ripped for all the turnovers, yet he made things happen. DG is now in that boat. We just have too many non scorers on our team. If yoiu cannot bring ten poiints to the team every game, you are underperforming. We may have one player now in double figures for scoring. Sad.

Can you win by defense alone? No. Greg needs to being hope and change for more scoring soon or we might win one more game this year.

Thank god we have DG and CB or we would look like Mickey Mouse Gone Wild.

True, but I thought they were aggressive mistakes though...Which I can live with from a freshman with few minutes.
