That game was stolen from us.

10-8 would be awesome for this group.
If you would have asked me at the beginning of the season, I would have taken that in a heartbeat. I would have begrudgingly taken it at the beginning of conference play. Now, I'm going say if the team wants more, I back them and will do whatever I can to support them with my presence and voice at Hilton. But, I won't criticize if they don't get more.

These young men have heart and TJ is a great person for ISU and happens to be a pretty darn good coach and recruits good players and coaches.

We should probably remember that we are in the second year of what appears to be a good rebuilding project and the future looks bright. We've got a measurably good fan base in their dedication, participation and veracity and more players coming in that TJ and his coaches have selected (which has worked pretty darn well thus far.)

Our team has outperformed expectation and then fans have stacked even higher expectations on that overperformance. That may not be fair. I, for one, am going to enjoy whatever our guys are able to produce this year and hope for more in the future.

I did a little research. I’m sure every team in the league would have more fouls called on the road than their opponent but I’d be shocked if any team has as drastic of a difference as ISU does. At home, the games have been called fairly even and ISU has won their 5 conference games by a total of 79 points. On the road, the refs have just destroyed ISU. We’ve been called for 33 more fouls and have shot 46 less free throws. So in our 6 road conference games, we’re at -7 in point differential despite a 2-4 record and massive difference in fouls and free throws. I fully expect to get called for more fouls on the road but if there wasn’t such a drastic difference, I think ISU would be 4-3 or 3-3 on the road and be in first place.

Can't we keep the crazy conspiracy theories in house?

We're a team whose strategy is to play incredibly aggressive defense, which results in fouls, which is obviously going to lead to some lopsided foul totals on the road. It's not a conspiracy, it's bball same as it's ever been, and the strategy that has been incredibly successful so far.

Honestly if Grill just makes that layup we most likely win.
And two “no call” bank shots. The 3 pointer showed the player smiling & the guard shot in the key falling backwards over Jones. Add Grills blown lay up. No way #11 ranked teams should consistently lose close games on the road. Starting to wonder if TJ needs to change his approach and ride the officials like other top coaches.

posted this in the other thread but this "foul" on Grill is as bad a call as you will ever see...and the guy came running in from further away than the ref who made the correct travel call

I would like to see what the over ruler saws there.
From this view, if you pause it at the moment the guy leaves his feet to rebound the ball,

1) Caleb is pretty much standing straight up.
2) He begins to jump as the guy is about to grasp the ball, but is simultaneously entering Caleb's "cylinder" (which they seemed to emphasizing last night) and impeding his ability to move freely.
3) Caleb's position DOES cause the player to travel. (Which can easily be called a foul becuase if you cause someone to travel while touching them, pushing, etc. it is a foul.)

From the reverse angle on the baseline it DID look like the guy was jumping above him, but not without running into Caleb and unfairly making a play that can not be legally made.

You can not expect a player who is getting jumped into to not cause the player that engages that contact to travel.

It was either a player control foul, displacement or a travel. NOT a foul on Caleb.

Which presumes that teams get treated differently on the road versus at home, which is straight up BS. If it's a foul on the road, it's a foul at home. There shouldn't be an inconsistent application of the rules based on venue.

Even the West Virginia writers thought that was an awfully officiated game. Here's a sample.

"Survived probably was a better word, for this was a difficult game to play. It was more rugby than basketball, it was marred by an officiating crew of Roger Ayers, James Breeding and Byron Jarrett who blew the whistle for 59 fouls.

There were bodies everywhere. Players being brushed and whistled for a foul, players being hammered and not. Both sides, although the Cyclones took the worst of it with 30 personal fouls, three players fouling out. In the end, WVU's difference was at the free throw line with 26 of 31 made."

"....but the ball was tipped and all of a sudden Caleb Grill had the ball going the other way.

He had a shot at a layup but Toussaint somehow bothered him. Was it a foul? On a night when everything else was called a foul, this one wasn’t
."

His last statement about when everything else was called a foul is telling coming from a WVU viewpoint.

If I was a betting man and the roles reversed......I would put good money that Grill would have been flagged.

I think it's as easy as that. Caleb wasn't in position to box out, the WVU player clearly got higher and secured the rebound and then the contact with Caleb caused him to fall to the ground.

For those that claim Caleb wasn't touched on his layup attempt. I understand the refs couldn't slow it down to 1/4 speed like I did, but it looked like a foul in real time and in slow mo replay. Joe clearly trips Caleb as he goes to jump.

WV was favored last night and TJ yelling has nothing to do with them hitting banked 3s and ISU having miscues with opportunities right in their hands late.

Tips any one?

You might want to rethink that 6 hours

Now this might not take spatchcocking into consideration but not sure that will buy you 3 hours

All while the crowd and coaches yell for stalls in their favor. It's garbage.

Shoon!!! Lipsey maybe redeemed himself there....

Refs weren’t good clearly…. but Grill making a wide open layup would’ve been nice

Honestly if Grill just makes that layup we most likely win.

Or if they call the foul on it

Refs were bad all night but replay clearly showed there wasn’t a foul on that one lol. Caleb anticipated a foul and it cost him

Hopefully a good listen for Grill moving forward that you have to try to actually make the basket and not put the game in the hands of the officials

No contact, but I guess they could’ve called a foul.

He was fouled....

He got hit on the leg while shooting pretty clearly.

Croissant extends his leg & his foot hits Grill's foot. Definitely a foul.

That wasnt the issue.

The problem was he was more concerned about throwing his head back and selling the foul than he was making the layup. An egregious mistake with how the game was being called. If he pays more attention to making the shot, just like at the end of the OSU game, he likely makes it.

Grill has been great this year but the pouting the frustration bs with the refs or how's he's guarded needs to stop. Play your game as the other stuff is out of your control.

no he wasn't

That was without a doubt the worst officiated game I've witnessed. The game would go in spurts with referees calling everything and then calling nothing. And ISU obviously got the worse end of the stick.

The charge Rob took that got reversed, the flagrant 1 that was called on Rob, 3 extremely weak calls on Shoon, Grill getting called for a foul when he literally didn't touch the guy driving, Grill getting called for a foul when the rebounder went over the back and was called for a travel, Jaz getting outright pushed into Grill forcing Grill into a turnover, Gabe taking probably the cleanest charge of the game only to be called a block, and then Tamin being called for a charge because his ass hit the defender while spinning and the defender flopped..

It was an all out ref show last night and I don't think there was anyway we were going to win that game with how things were being called. They looked for calls when WVU had the ball down the stretch and looked the other way when we did, especially when we got down. West Virginia made 2 (TWO!!) baskets in the final 11 minutes of that game. I'm not into saying referees rigged any games and I don't think it happened here. But these referees dictated the outcome of this game. Even if Grill makes that layup (which he should've) there was probably a 75% or greater chance that we would've gotten called for a foul on the next possession.
