49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

That one to Kittle on the sideline was discussed on NFL RedZone as it happened, and the thinking was it could have been QB/TE not on the same page regarding route as Purdy was expecting a back-shoulder pass placement but Kittle turned into the defender.
I blame Kittle. God damn hawkeyes.

The criticism of Brock this game is valid. He missed a few throws. I'm sure if we take the same amount of scrutiny on other QB's like Brady and Rogers there are plays they left out on the field too. The difference is they have 35 plus years of experience.

The beauty of the team Brock is on is that they don't need him to be Patrick Mahomes out there. It's okay for him to make mistakes, the 49ers can afford them as a team. His job basically is to not totally throw the game away, and anything else above that is icing on the cake. It's a perfect role for a young guy just breaking into the League -- he doesn't need to carry the team. He only needs to go play at an average level (and he has exceeded that level multiple times).

This exactly. He'll have great games and he'll have terrible games - just like at ISU (only please don't throw the ball the wrong direction again). But he fits perfectly in their system. I love Brock, but you put him on the Packers or most any other team and he's going to look like a true rookie. He may not look like a 7th rounder, but he would look like a late round rookie.

I’m not so sure about that. He really does look like he’s improved drastically since he played at Iowa State.

It could very well be. I think a lot of it is he's being able to use his natural talents for once and he's a lot more comfortable. A lot of times I'll post quotes from a player or recruit and not attribute it on purpose. He's one that I posted about before being very uncomfortable from day one and not liking the stationary role he was put in. That goes a long way to feeling the pocket and progressing on the reads better. Plus I think he has a whole lot better positional and offensive coaching.

This reminds me of Roethlisberger’s rookie year on the Steelers. Had a great defense to rely on, and on offense he had Hines Ward, Plaxico Burress (I don’t think he had plaxidentally shot himself in the leg yet) and Antwan Randle El. But most of all they had Jerome Bettis to rely on and they road the bus to the afc championship. Big Ben didn’t have to do much other than distribute and not screw up, and he really didn’t do a whole hell of a lot more than that.

Not surprised but this. I mean, it is like a sixth grader going to jr. high, a senior in high school becoming a freshman in college.

Each step, each level involves more and different ways to learn. Just because a student gets a few more A's in junior high than he did as a sixth grader doesn't mean the sixth grade teacher was crap.

And I would hope coaches at ISU would be willing to learn different ways to do their job better as well. If not, then that would be a problem.

I believe all this talk about Brock's dramatic improvement in mechanics and stuff is overstated. Just like any other NFL QB, if you put Brock on a team with a solid Oline, a serious running game, and very good receivers, he's going to shine.

So Purdy is making the most of his luck, gets experience, and might be exposed at some point. But right now, and maybe into the future, he is good, and it's good for SF, Purdy, the NFL, and Iowa State, too!

No matter what is future is in San Fran, the kid has made himself millions in the last month. Even if some of those weaknesses do wind up being exposed, he's proven himself to be more than capable, a great locker room guy and an elite preparer. Guys with those qualities can be 13 year back ups and make tens of millions of dollars.
