49ers - Brock Purdy - Still and Always #1

Not my area if expertise either but It would almost shock me if 2/3s goes to the player per jersey. That seems like a high number given all the different parties involved probably dividing that pie.

Agreed. No insider knowledge here but I'm guessing the 2/3 vs 1/3 cuts are from the royalty, which is probably in the 10-15% range. So if Brock's jersey sells for $120, the total royalty might be $12-18, and Brock might get $8-12 of that.

He had a good receiver/big target/50-50 guy with Pettway in 2019. That was followed up with X coming on board in 2020 and putting in a Big 12 Newcomer of the Year performance.
Both X and Pettway were more of a catch and run/beat you by running a great route type receiver than they were jump ball guys. I’d actually say the only weakness in X’s game was how bad he was on jump balls/controlling the ball going to the ground.

Would you expect those two to make a circus catch with 2 defenders on them over the top?

They weren't 50/50 ball guys.

Considering that SF was trying to get rid of Jimmy G preseason and that this is the last year of his contract, I would think it's a no-brainer to let him go and ride with Purdy and Lance. Lance has the bigger contract, but Purdy has shown out so far.

I think barring some horrific collapse, it's Brock's job to lose at this point. Plus, I think I saw that Lance had yet another surgery on his ankle just a week or so ago.
The surgery lance had was just to remove hardware. In the grand scheme of things that is pretty minor, will not slow down his recovery. I have had that done. It usually is either planned or done to increase range of motion back to normal after healing. Not a lot of recovery directly from that surgery, just continuation from original surgery/injury.

Need someone smarter than me to make this into a gif.

Never underestimate the ability of the Bay Area sports franchise powers-that-be to make really, really, really poor decisions.

That being said, it would be pretty stupid to take the starting job away from Purdy at any point this season OR next without good evidence proving someone else can do better. The kid has shown he can play. Lance should be the backup QB (I don't anticipate Jimmy G. to get another year). If anyone is looking for a reason as to why, I give you NFL week 1: an embarrassing 19-10 loss to the *Bears* and week 3: an embarrassing 11-10 loss to the Broncos.
Purdy is the week 1 starter next year unless he has a really bad game in the playoffs and Lance clearly outplays him in the pre-season. Otherwise you don’t mess with this, regardless of how good Lance looks in practice and how much they’re paying him.

Worth a look - this SF writer breaks down Brock's "misses" vs. the Raiders.

Dude sounds like my wife assessing some of my decisions with perfect 20/20 hindsight. I tell her "you hurt my feelings" and she says "you have no feelings". Of interest is the fact that none were intercepted. Yeah, he had a good not great game. He will learn. Bottom line they won.

He was assessing his skill as a potential franchise QB for the 49ers. Totally fair and honestly a huge complement that Purdy is getting analyzed as a potential franchise QB rather than just a fill in. Might be more exciting to me to hear than all the videos hyping his good plays.

I get your point which is valid. If you, in fact, get more excited about analysis of why a play did not work rather than see the plays that worked, Sportscenter is not your go to channel. Purdy is far from a proven polished product and has been fortunate that some of his weak throws haven't been picked off. But that's why they are DB's instead of WR's. If he doesn't get dinged up, we will find out his true potential in the play offs as the D's and their coaches prepare for him. I will be surprised if SF goes far but it's been a Hollywood story so far so who knows.

I meant more excited for Brock's future. Seeing critical videos like this just shows that people are not viewing him as just a flash in the pan.

I'd rather see good highlights for entertainment of course.

If the guy can only identify 5-6 plays that are "bad" in a road win, that's not bad. Every QB misses. Every QB misses reads. If Kittle gets turned around a second earlier and makes the adjustment a bad throw becomes a good one. If that goal line defender is a millisecond late Kittle catches that ball for a TD (still looked like the throw may have squeezed through to Kittle and bounced off him). The thing with Brock is that much of the time he is throwing into coverage he attempts to place the ball where only his guy can get it. When it doesn't work or the receiver can't make the adjustment, it looks like a bad throw. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. The thing is that the downside is usually an incompletion and not a pick.

Today, Purdy was on KNBR, the 49ers flagship station in San Francisco, for his first interview with the morning crew (Murph & Mac). I used to listen to KNBR every morning when I had a desk job. It's rare I get to tune in these days, but I randomly did this morning and heard Purdy would be on. Fortunately, they save all their segments to listen to online. Just look for the date of 1/3 and Brock's name (if accessing this later than today) on the list of their podcasts.

PFF or Football Outsiders tracks things like turnover worthy plays. Every QB has at least a couple a game. A 7th round rookie making only a handful "bad" plays in a game is actually pretty good.

The guy is a total Purdy supporter - was on the "Brock > Jimmy or Trey" bandwagon after maybe 2 games. I don't think it's too harsh; I certainly think Brock would say he could do better.

What a month for #13.

Sure, but this seems like the ultimate in nitpicking. If Brock had enough snaps to qualify, his ESPN QBR would rank 5th right behind Tua and ahead of Dak.

That one to Kittle on the sideline was discussed on NFL RedZone as it happened, and the thinking was it could have been QB/TE not on the same page regarding route as Purdy was expecting a back-shoulder pass placement but Kittle turned into the defender.
