Eli King??

Announcers are uninformed about people all the time. Their little notes said he scored a lot of points in high school and they needed someone to talk about.

Are people seriously criticizing TJ for not playing someone more based on ESPN+ announcers?
No....

Yeah, that's not it for me, but I do have a "link" stuck in my head and it's been there since we first were named frontrunner to sign Eli King. He's from Caledonia in SE MN, a stone's throw from La Crosse. Other than the receding hairline, I had him visualized as a more athletic Matt Thomas clone!

Fans just want to see highly touted recruits play, more so when he's competing for minutes with mercurial performers like Kalschuer & Grill. Give the kid some run T.J.!

So TJ should just do what the fans want based off of recruiting numbers?

Matt Thomas was raked across the coals for a lot of his career...so give him some run so CF can have someone else to go after?

I had to go back and look because I didn't remember him almost losing the ball on his own. I saw it get poked away by a defender with about 30 seconds left. Is that what you're referring to? I guess you can say that shouldn't happen, but it's not like he just dribbled it off his foot in the backcourt. It's pretty tough to judge either way in mop up time when he's being told not to go toward the basket.

I've never been one to spend much time analyzing shots. They can shoot it granny style for all I care, as long as it goes in. I didn't see anything in his very limited game time to tell me his shot is the problem, which you stated is the reason why he's not playing.

AGAIN, I'm not saying Eli should be starting or getting 20+ minutes a game and I don't think we magically turn into early '90s UNLV if he plays more, but I don't think it's that unnatural for some fans to wonder why a kid that was a 3/4* recruit with other high major offers is getting the same minutes as the guy who was a backup qb for Kansas a year ago.

More to the point for me, if he's that far behind (most likely on defense if we know anything about TJ) I don't understand why we blew a year of eligibility for 10 total minutes of game time.

So because someone has eligibility they should just play a bunch?

It seems like TJ is very good at communicating with players and I'll trust that the important people in this equation, the player and coaches, are handling it.

Ya, that's pretty much the exact opposite of what I said, but you know that. You're just propping up straw men at this point.

Based on what? Why are people so concrete about this?
My opinion- King will be a decent player by his junior year. Needs time to develop. At his size he needs great ball handling skills, passing skills and a three point shot. Because he can dunk in HS does not make him a great B12 athlete. No way he should be in the rotation at this point. I hope he stays because I think he can contribute in the future.
We have 4th and 5th year guards, all with various limitations and skills. TJ has every incentive to put his best guys on the floor and try to win. Trust TJ.

You can think both.

Sure the players who play should get the most minutes, and be in this game for more game action. But are they really learning a whole lot up 20+ points on Mcneese State? Especially playing against a zone that we really won't see the rest of the year?

What does it hurt to give a freshman some run time (especially in the second half up 20+points)? We all know there are added pressures of playing in front of a crowd against another D1 school. Give Eli some time in the game and let him make some mistakes that you can point to in the game film the next day. I don't understand holding him until under 4 minutes left if you really believe he would even be able to be an addition to next year's team. Do I want us to be like Fran and play 10 deep every night? No. But, this scenario just seems odd to me.

So you didn't see him almost lose control of the ball just dribbling it?

Per his stroke: I'm not sure he gets that shot off in a normal game situation. That's not exactly a quick release.

I can see putting him at the 4 minute mark or something but with how this team goes in to lulls, him just getting a bunch of time doesn't make sense.

Hopefully the next two are bigger blow outs so he does get more time.

People are acting like he's the missing link to something bigger for ISU and it's weird.
Too many of our fans must have been watching Fran trot a walk on (carter kingsbury) out on the court for 11 minutes yesterday against a Big 10 opponent. Fran always does stupid coaching/motivational moves like this, often to the detriment of the end result, and thank God he isn't our coach. Although Eli would probably get more minutes if he was.

What was the lead at the 10 minute mark?
Kunc can't injured at any other time of the game?

Perhaps there's a reason they played the guys so long since they got rolled a few days earlier?
52-29 with a 99.8% win probability.
Of course he can get hurt in the game earlier, that really has nothing to do with him and gabe playing with the game decided. They play early to win, once you’ve got the win why risk the injury? Hopefully not the first time you’ve come across this concept.
Gabe and Jaz were responsible for the Iowa game alone?

Don't they have a whole week off from games too for fall finals?

The only reason we want to see Eli play more is we don't want to lose a 4 star recruit next year to the transfer portal. Fans to need realize that he is not ready yet. TJ may have already said "We want you here next year but we need to work on some things" and Eli knows where he stands. Everyone needs to calm down on Eli.

Oh is that what I said?

Maybe the coaches who spend hours upon hours on the inner workings of their program have a few things they want to iron out? Maybe they know why someone is or isn't playing?

Is it too much to leave it at that?

Matt Thomas was a top 50 national recruit. Eli King was a 3 star #150.

I mean you said guys may have played longer because they got rolled. Those two played latest.

Did you watch the game? There wasn’t ironing out going on with Jaz and Gabe then.

Ultimately it’s not a big deal, not sure why you’re making it a hill to die on. I’m not.

What is the risk of him leaving? I know he was recruited by Iowa. Would suck to have another Haluska situation, or the women's player from a couple years ago. I'd be a proponent of playing him more if only to keep him out of Iowa City.
