Well.... we must of had someone coaching special teams, as we had only two men back protecting the punter this year vis-a-vis a 3 man contingent which I see most teams utilize, so there is that creativity; not that I would utilize that particular scheme, seemed we were always close to a block and no margin if the punter had trouble handling the snap, but someone was being creative, and getting an extra man downfield in coverage. Then I don't know how our defensive return average compared to other programs, maybe there was some advantage I was not aware of.
Maybe, but it a sign that guys care and want to perform their best on the field, as well as win. So if it does affect the culture; it will be temporary I would think. Frustration is really hard to circumnavigate over an entire season that starts reasonably well, pointing to success, then have the floor drop out IMHO
Many have been comparing College experience between Collin Klein and Nate, as Collin had a very successful first year at KSU. Looked up a couple of stats for comparison-
Career passing yards- Collin 4573 Nate 8568 yds.
Career rushing yards- Collin 2455 Nate 2066 yds.
Now I know Nate had opportunities to pad his stats playing the Hawks, but Collin also got Kansas to pick on. Anyway, I would have to say Nate was a very good college QB, on a mediocre team.

Nate has ears. He can hear what Matt wants out of the offense just as well as anybody. I expect no change in the offense until the offensive line improves. I fully expect wherever Manning goes there will be substantial improvement.
Sure. But, how do you know who has a fresh approach and who doesn't, if you don't have inside knowledge. And, hell, I'm a Baby Boomer, too, so maybe that fact is irrelevant?
Easy, you just make it up and pretend that you actually know.
OC Nate's offense will automatically improve if his playcalling includes a forward pass that flies more than 15 yards down field. Crossing routes might even work then.
Nate has been seen as a rising star in coaching circles for a while.
And yes, he had quite a nice career at Illinois.
If people think he is gonna continue the exact CampbellBall offense of this last year, I think you will be very surprised.
There is no way Nate would sign on for that. Not how business or this profession works.
I imagine he demanded a very large degree of control, especially around playcalling and play design.
He would be foolish to continue Manning's follies. He wouldn't sacrifice his career like that.
I'm ready for a whole new Shogun samurai style of offense. Unbeatable! It would take a while for any defense to catch up to this...

Also, from TCU's perspective would have been much easier to sneak from the 1 inch line than the 1 yard line.
Scheelhaase is a rising star. Garrett Riley was given the Broyles Award. Scheelhaase is not too young. I see Scheelhaase as one of those young coaches who is going to do great things. He is our best recruiter. The wise move was to promote Scheelhaase. Trust Campbell.

but who are way more creative with motion, play design , tempo , etc .... basically everything on pages 2-10 of a 10 page book on offense.
I love 20 per or 12 per. I love wanting to be physical. I really like wanting to control the game. So I'm a million percent on board with that.
What I dislike is the fact that we seem to try to run head first into a brick wall and expect the wall to give. That's why I'm not in love with the hire. I understand why it was made, if you're going down you wan to go down with those you trust, etc - and Scheelhase has the marks of a promising coach. But there are things that many teams who run similar personnel due that I'd like to see at Iowa State.
I'm not talking about going Tennessee and trying to run a play every half second the ball's spotted. Or air raid. I just mean having more motions than having Rus and Noel jog across the formation a million times in a game. You can have 10 plays if they all look alike and having the motions to distract the defenses' eyes from where the ball's going. When you don't distract the defense and they're not thinking and just flowing, having 10 plays makes playing offense really frigging tough.

IMO we have to remember Mannng was OC. Not sure Matt was micro managing Manning. IMO Manning kind of let the 3 TE formations go to his head. We lost Soehner. Then Kolar and Allen. New TE’s do not warrant putting 3 TE’s on the field at one time. We do not have 3 top notch TE’s any more. And RB’s injured meant we had another position group at a disadvantage. Inconsistent line play meant at some point we would self destruct. Usually in the Red Zone. Desperation on offense leads to inconsistency and failures psychologically and physically on special teams. Manning was allowed to move on or be fired. Manning chose to move on.
Wasn't Manning a TE coach for the Colts for 1 year? Wouldn't you expect that that experience shaped how he likes to run an offense (at least a little bit)?
Yes. And heard Colts utilized 3 TE’s in formations while he was there. I know when Manning first came back we ran a lot of 3 TE stuff with Soehner playing the role of a blocking FB mostly. And Kolar and Allen on the field same time. Our TE’s are not good enough now to put 3 of them on the field at once now. And the times he absolutely calls the right play on offense we fail to execute. Also think the large amounts of shifts and time OL is in a stance before snapping leads to larger number of illegal procedure penalties.
The reality is, a good coaching staff will adjust what they want to do with what their personnel can do. Unless your program is getting their choice of 4 and 5 * players year in and year out, there needs to be some compromise between the two.
This past year seemed like a whole lot of running into a brick wall repeatedly. From time to time, there would be glimpses of the play calling and execution coming together and working quite well, but then we'd fall back into doing the same **** that didn't work over and over.
If the offensive line stinks, it's up to the coaches to figure out a way to fix it or work around it. That never happened this year, and that's why we needed a change at OC.
