Big 12 New TV Deal - Huge Positives

I see you're PAC-12 tweet and raise you this this one.

We keep hearing Yormark talk about culture. New schools would need to be a good fit.

I'm an old PAC 10 fan. It was a great league. That said I'm not sure many schools fit the Big 12 culture.

Utah fans seem like ass. ASU administration has been taking shots. CU left before. There could be a $10 million/yr difference in revenue (at the high end of estimates)

Yormark is looking west, but is there an actual fit? Arizona?

Arizona is the only clear fit at this point in my mind

Stuff like that makes me think "let's wait on ACC collapse and just grab 4 teams out east to go with WV, UCF, Cincy, etc." Let's see how Utah does when UW/UO go to the B1G, and they are playing in Boise and Albuquerque every other year.
I don't give much credence to random tweets. I can understand their nervousness about the future.

Utah is solid academic university, but its not like they have a long history in the Pac12. Or the Pac12 will have the same academic standing once realignment is finished. UCLA and USC are two of the top 4 academic schools in the Pac12.

Utah has a longer association with schools like UNLV, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado State than Stanford or Cal!

Still think we end up with a P3 in about a decade, so Big12 expansion should happen west & east.

So they'll be a natural rival with Baylor.

I think that is going to be quite a while, so I'd take 4 from the PAC 12 to kill that off, and then add 2-4 from the ACC when that happens.

All it’s going to take is for just one PAC team to bolt for the new BIG12.

I keep hearing from AZ insider that AZ is all about B12 and ASU is all about keeping Pac together.

I wonder why we'd even want to add both. Add AZ and Colorado...that has to be a net positive. Let Utah and ASU stay in the Pac like many of their fans wanted. Utah has been trashing Big 12 since the minute BYU joined, they can keep their Pac without USC/UCLA/Wa/Ore/AZ/CO. They'll be lords of new MWC.

AZ & CU now. Stay at 14 until ACC gets raided. When ACC gets raided, add those best leftovers to pair up with Cincy/WVU/UCF. Probably end up at 16 to 20 depending on what SEC/Big Ten do devouring ACC.

Pete Mundo gives a fairly insightful analysis here in the first few minutes on the league's new tv deal. He is somewhat of a K-State nerd, but his analsysis of the sport is pretty spot on.

This is exactly why we hired Yormark. In a cutthroat era of modern semi pro (I mean college) sports, we needed a grizzled business man who knows the inner workings of media. Our league is in such a bright spot right now, having a AD/Politician type would not have served us well. What I love most about this is Yormark front ran our deal - he got ours done in FRONT of the Pac 12's. He is playing for keeps to keep our league the third most relevant league. If he is going to keep us being the third most valuable league, that's a best case scenario for us as far as I am concerned. Also in the details of this video I think I heard: 1) The top 4 football Big 12 games will be on ESPN /ESPN 2 every week 2) Some basketball games will be picked up by Fox and FS1 for hoops, but the football will be mostly ESPN. This is a great outcome Cyclones. The Pac 12 is officially in scramble mode. This could be a domino that leads to a couple pac 12 schools jumping towards us. Discuss:

Yeah, I mean if any of the PAC schools looking to possibly bolt were really believing all the Mandel, Canzano B.S., this deal is a huge wake up call for them.

Because they now know that Yormark doesn't just talk a good game but also delivers. It'll be interesting to see what Arizona does now.

This is the one part of the contract I don't love personally. ESPN/ABC owns 100% of the SEC and ACC rights along with the best of the Big 12 rights. I am guessing most weeks the SEC and ACC will get all three ABC windows and our best game will be on ESPN.

I don't even know what else is going to be on FOX; after their 11:00am B1G game they have very little inventory unless they get a huge chunk of the Pac-12. I was personally hoping for a deal where FOX got our best game every week and committed to showing it on FOX at 2:30 or 7:00 every week.

I hope that there's some provision about those top 4 games a year going on ABC and then after that, FOX and ESPN trade off so that in weeks without an ABC game, there's a FOX game. I think the Big 12's big advantage over the Pac-12, even if the Pac-12 gets better money, will be that we are playing on networks while they are on Amazon Prime Video or Apple TV+. While ESPN is still way better in the access category than those streamers, it's not quite as good as guaranteed network TV placement.
I'm not worried about the ACC getting the ABC slot ahead of us.

As long as the Big XII keeps playing football at the level we've been at for quite awhile, I think we'll be on ABC plenty.

If I were a media company I'd covet the ACC's top slots and probably value the American Athletic as much as the rest of the conference.

Totally agree here. Is there really value in having 2 'Zona schools and 2 Utah schools? I wouldn't think so.

Colorado and Arizona should be our top targets.

Arizona's been unhappy in the PAC for a long time, and Colorado's football program is a shell of what it was in the Big 8/12. They need major facilities upgrades too from what I've read.

That may also make the Big 10 show their cards on Oregon and Washington, and if an invite isn't in there for them, they might jump to the Big 12 instead.

I agree. I am just glad we have CycloneLarry and his regular tweets about tasing his nutsack if ISU loses out there in the Twitterverse representing us well.

Colorado and Arizona are brutal in football.
People underestimate just how epically bad colorado is right now. They are almost at KU levels bad and it will take years and years to build that thing back up.

No way, Yormark is making decisions by perusing Twitter fans.

Utah, ASU, Colorado fans are asses. Go get Arizona, Washington state, Oregon state, SDSU. Tell those three to pound sand.

I’m much more skeptical than you considering ABC will have its pick of any game from either the SEC or the ACC. I don’t think the new Big 12 will regularly crack the top 3 among the games of those 3 leagues.

This realignment stuff stinks, but it is what it is and we adjusted and survived and now have a deal that’s damn good. OSU, wazzu have been silent not talking crap like those other 3. So do they culturally fit thoughts? I know you grab the others if you can, but Yormark preached cultural fit.

Arizona is the only clear fit at this point in my mind

How is this for a very small but focused expansion plan long term?

A: Arizona and VaTech.

B: AZ, CU, VaTech, Pitt.

*Alternate: Louisville

Thinking about schools that may be a great fit, add more than they subtract, but likely never have any interest from SEC or Big Ten.

Colorado and Arizona are brutal in football.

I really haven't seen how being 8-9 deep in football or basketball has helped perception of the conference. Computers have had Big 12 as #1 or #2 in football all season and the media narrative isn't anywhere near that. Might as well have some actual bad teams to pad the win column for the top teams and add some new markets, AZ/CU have high ceiling to not suck some day too.

The league has been drastically better than any other in basketball for over a decade and the media barely acknowledges it or more often fabricates lies about that not being the reality.

In basketball specifically I am hoping UCF is super bad for all eternity. Every other major conference has 3-4 programs like that to the current Big 12's none.
