The Fran fade

None of the guys you mentioned grew up in Iowa though.
No, but Fred did and look how fans viewed that when he came back as coach.

Sure in state kids hold a higher place, but we love our former Cyclones and same goes for Iowa. In reality that affinity pretty much holds true for any school.

Gatens played for Fran, so Fran trusts that relationship. Not unlike Campbell and his hiring Mt Union guys.

Iowa or Iowa State fans of both schools like to see their former stars as part of the program. Deon Broomfield is a example on the Cyclone side. As fans we would be beside ourself if TJ at some point hired Naz, Matt, Monte or George's.
Gatens is a great guy and growing into a strong coach but a staff should compliment each other’s strengths. Who is the ace recruiter on the current staff? We know it’s not Sherm- maybe one of the two new guys will become that but neither is known as that on a Big 10 level at this time. Who is going to recruit Minnesota? Or maybe Chicago? Or Wisconsin? Who is the defensive expert (ala KG) on this staff? Again, the past 12 years show it’s not Sherm. Fran has had little movement on his staff- one guy took a lateral job 3-4 years ago, another retired this spring, and one got his own gig. Fran will never have another chance to shake things up a bit and instead he promotes a guy from within and brings back a former player who has never worked in the Big 10. The word out of IC is he wants “yes” people and these moves would all support that. Iowa fans can expect more 15-20 win seasons feasting on a lame non-con schedule and the bottom half of the league and home by the first Sunday night of the NCAA tournament.

Fran doesn't recruit. Recruits flock to the program.

You must not have heard, Duke is finally brave enough to face them this year.

As a north Iowa guy, I was kind of pulling for Dean Oliver or Jeff Horner to get the job, myself. Fran isn't comfortable recruiting/hiring guys from that far north though, apparently.

Iowa's starting lineup will be interesting next year. Right now I see it being:

Ulis
Perkins
PMAC
Murray
Rebraca

On paper, their roster looks really poor. No bench depth at all at the 4 position really. The 5 position is just horrible. And really not one threat from the PG position. You have to hope guys like Ulis and Perkins take huge steps next season.

We had a lot less production coming back last year. I'm not optimistic either having said that. I do think Sandfort will be a good option off bench and I think Perkins will take big step. I agree with the 1 and 5 spot

I think it's very similar this year. Patrick, Kris and Perkins are the only guys I'd consider to be Big 10 quality guys at the moment. Ulis just isn't good, Sandfort was a freshman so you never know there, but then it's guys like Connor, Rebraca, Mulvey, Big Jelly, and two true freshman that I don't expect to do much.

Last year you had Keegan AND Kris coming back along with Patrick and the best 3pt shooter in Iowa history.

Rebraca will have eligibility left? That seems unpossible.

If the True frosh Bowens doesn't start at PG their fan base might lose it. Apparently Bowens is the next Allen Iverson.

If Uhlis is starting PG with Rebracca at the 5 again then yikes.

If Kris had not returned Iowa would not win 10 games.

As for Kris...everyone thinks at age 22 he's going to be Keegan this year. He aint Keegan. Kris can shoot from 3 but he's not the scorer Keegan was by alot IMO.

Kris is not a post up fade away scorer...Kris can def hit that open 3 but that is about it. And he won't have Keegan on other side for teams to worry about leaving Kris open.

Iowa frontcourt is going to be bad...Rebracca...the big fat kid? and other tall dude who looks meh (granted his frosh year last year)..

They lack serious athleticsm and depth up front...

What is a big step? Perkins is in his 4th year...Not much step left.

It is like ISU fans saying expect Grill to take a big step. Probably not happening.

Some Iowa fans are just setting themselves up for massive disappointment. Kris is gonna average 23 points like Keegan did because they’re twins and the freshman PG is gonna come in and run the show.
