Matchday 13 of 14 tomorrow (Sunday) with the US playing a massively important match against Panama in Orlando.

Mexico travels to Honduras and Costa Rica plays away at El Salvador.

A draw for the US tomorrow will guarantee a finish no lower than 4th. A win for the most part would cement a finish no lower than 3rd (getting jumped by Costa Rica would require them to overturn a 7 goal difference in GD).

I’m slowly trying to get into soccer. Kids play and I enjoy watching it but don’t totally understand it. Especially international competition. Briefly Explain to me where we are as a team like I am 6.

Qualifying for the next World Cup is wrapping up this week with the US playing matches on Sunday and Wednesday. The current standings are in the table in the original post. The US is currently sitting in 2nd. The top 3 teams at the end of qualifying will get auto bids to the WC later this year. The 4th place team will have a shot at qualifying by playing against the winner from the Oceania region (most likely New Zealand).

The US basically is in a win and they’re in position. Things could interesting if they aren’t able to take 3 points tomorrow depending on the results from the other matches.

This is a good time to jump onto the USMNT bandwagon, IMO. The core of the team is a bunch of 23 and younger guys some of whom are playing at some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

I never even realized that Canadians knew how to play soccer.
Because they just figured out how. Canada has been really good even without their best player Alphonso Davies (who is one of the best in the world at his position)

A win gets you 3 points, a tie 1 point and a loss zero

You will know when USA soccer gets to the next level when they stop sweating to qualify to the WC. CONCACAF is not a strong federation.
Well this is probably going to be the last two game we ever have to worry about. 2026 is automatic qualification and 2030 will be more teams added to the WC and a different qualification process.

Hahaha fair. My main point is that if team USA wants to compete against the top tier of soccer, they need to be able to handle the other teams in CONCACAF with ease with Mexico being the exception. I am on wait and see mode regarding Canada going forward.

There are a lot of factors that make this easier said than done. Canada is only going to get stronger. Their connection to England and the amount of educated and upwardly mobile immigrants flocking there gives them a good base to build on. Plus they aren’t going to have to deal with the “pay to play” model that we have in the US. It will be more of a European setup there in their youth system.

Absolutely there are lots of factors. I’m not arguing that it will be easy, more saying that my previous statement is a good gauge to know once USA soccer breaks away to the next level.

To your point I hate how soccer is structured in the US from the youth levels to MLS not having relegations. Thats probably a topic for another thread as I don’t want to derail this one.

Hot take: US will never get past the Quarters of a WC in my lifetime. I’m 40.

If we win tonight we are very likely in, although Costa Rica's win margin vs. El Salvador could be relevant as well. We play CR on Wednesday and the only way we would be out after a win tonight is if CR wins today as well and then beats us on Wednesday, all wiping out a -7 goal differential.

So, example:

USA 2-1 Panama
Costa Rica 3-0 El Salvador

Then,
Costa Rica 3-0 USA

We'd be out (of the top three but still in the one-game inter-federation playoff).

Would we be out or would we go to the play-in game in that scenario?

I could be having a massive brain fart on a Sunday morning, but I’m pretty sure Costa Rica will need more goals than your example. The US is currently +9 in goal differential so a 2-1 win today would put us at +10. Costa Rica is currently +2 so two 3-0 wins would not be enough to overtake the US.

Play-in game, I believe New Zealand is the expected opponent for that?

A win or draw tonight puts us in the play-in game at absolute worst.

The Oceania semis are happening this morning. It looks like the Solomon Islands are going to win the first, and New Zealand plays Tahiti here in a couple hours. NZ would be the favorite to advance and win the final.
