Tre King (Georgetown transfer)

I feel like trying to get eligible this year is a waste. It'll likely be a month before he is up to speed, with the holidays, could be longer than that. Just doesn't seem worth it to upgrade the 9th guy in the rotation. Best case would be something that let him play two full years.

No way in the world is he the ninth guy.

He wouldn't be here if he was.

Talk here of him displacing Jones, who is the 9th guy in the rotation. You have King getting minutes over Jaz? When he hasn't practiced this year? Has no time in TJs system? No matter how literal you take the "9th man", I see him at best, our 4th big right now. It could be Feb by the time he hits his stride and is really competing with the others, seems like a waste to use an entire year for 8-10 games, just because you can.

Hate to say this because Enaruna has played so well for us but King looks like a natural upgrade. He has similar size and athleticism, but is far more polished from a basketball standpoint. I suspect that is the guy who will shed minutes, but it is likely he take some time from Enaruna/Jaz/ and Jones.

I think King will get plugged into that backup 5 spot to begin with. In my eyes, he's more of a post than a stretch / wing 4, which is perfectly fine because he's still skilled enough to play that position. He'll be perfect when we want to go big and when we go small and he's at the 5, we'll likely have five shooters on the floor that you have to worry about.

To me, Kunc and Enaruna are more skilled with the ball than King and are almost like guards out there. I could be entirely wrong though because I'm basing my thought process on King's highlights from two years ago and he certainly could've developed more in his handling and stuff.

IF he is eligible shortly after break, I would suspect they'd practice him into shape, cram him in the film room and flood him with offensive set run throughs and defensive scheme work during break. However, he still won't be ready for huge chunks of time right away, such that they'll put him in about 5 minutes in each half. If he continually learns fast and outperforms other options, he'll earn more minutes over time.

This. Their is no ROI with letting him play this year. Use a year to 'hope' he can gel in just a few months? I'd rather use him to push people in practice and he will be ready to go next year.

Correct. If he is eligible his time will steadily increase as the season unfolds. With already 9 players rotating now the transition should be rather smooth but noticeable having 5 extra fouls down low so the guys can be much more aggressive.

Well, at a minimum…if he can play right away…he’s 5 more fouls at the 5 spot we could use.

This. Right now we only have 10 rotation players especially thin at the center position. No reason to not apply for the waiver to add P5 depth who come tourney time would be top 8 in the rotation. We cant forget that the staff was expecting to have Hinson/Foster to help in the post as late as Sept getting King to fill those lost minutes will help the team. I'll admit I am not overly optimistic he'll get it but no reason not to send it to the NCAA and see.

I'm usually one silently mocking the members who constantly ask about how many years of eligibility a student has (fball and bball) due to the COVID exceptions. I now realize it can prove to be a mental mess at times.

King did play last year, right? And he has never redshirted, so he gets the free COVID year of eligibility?

If I'm understanding correctly, the possibilities are:
  • Waiver: Immediate Eligibility Granted - He plays spring '22, and the entire '22-'23 season
  • Wavier: Not-Immediate Eligibility Granted - He sits spring '22, plays the '22-'23 & '23-'24 season?
  • No Waiver: He sits spring '22 and fall '22, plays spring '23 and the entire '23-'24 season?

I sure hope that he can play this year. Jones is pretty much a fouling machine with very little offense and George has a lot of ability but also tends to get in foul trouble. Not sure why Enaruna didn't play more last night. I'm sure that TJ has a good reason.

Beverly was 6'5" 255 lbs and had a defensive rating of giving up 110+ points/100 possesions

King is 6'9" 225 lbs with a 94 defensive rating.

Are we sure King is 6'9"? Was that with shoes & socks on? After TJ gets him measured he might be 6'6". Damn 225 lbs, he's going to get pushed around ISU's training table. Conditt & Jones are drooling at the extra food they'll get. WOW a 94 defensive rating, we should only recruit guys who give 110% every play.

I wonder if they would let/want the player make that kind of announcement. I'm betting it is more like, "hey, i'll be ON the team on dec. 26th, pravticing, etc." No way the NCAA allows us to have him if we want it. That is against their bylaws.

Now, if he is eligible. Holy ****!
