Dear ISU AD: Please Stop Changing Hilton

Some of you are confusing my OP with a complaint on the crowd, which I am not. The crowd was great, A+ to everybody who was there. I love you all. My OP was directed at the new seating configuration of the student section. When watching on TV, you used to see fans surrounding the court, now you see fans on the sides and empty concrete on the baselines. Again, not a complaint with the fans, you all sounded amazing.

From my friend that works with Hilton set up and take down. From what he heard it was a safety concern that forces the changes. They wanted more space for event staff to move around with behind the basketball. Plus to reduce the chances an opponent player might interact with the student section if one jumps into the area behind the baskets. I didn't ask about the little fence because this was the first game I noticed those. However, yeah the big reason sounds like an ease of movement. I think it is dumb since you can't even see the students anymore while watching the game.

So it was an overreaction to Pemsl basically. What a joke. I suppose Barta pushed for this!

Hilton was awesome last night! We need the students to show out like that more often

I too am extremely disappointed that they pushed back the students. Who give's a *uck about making it harder to set up and tear down. Set up the arena to win games and defend home court! I think you could pass the hat right now and get donations to cover an extra salary or two and some pay increases to event staff after starting 9-0...

It seems that the "fence" is built into the new bleachers. FYI, it is not a complete fence. From what I could see, there are still openings at the bottom of each aisle and no gate to "prevent" a court storming. However, I suppose it gives a smaller area for security to block.

I could see the student section doing some fun stuff with posters along the fence. I could also see CACC nixing the best ideas.

For instance, last night, they could have had a row of posters on the fence for each of JoBo's years as a Hok, but go up to like 20!

Or call it the Fencl with a sign saying that the fence is to protect students from the awful Pemsl variant.

If that is the case, they need to extend the court a couple panels out towards the student section. The empty warehouse look is ugly AF

honestly as dumb as it sounds, the lighting is my biggest gripe about all the changes in Hilton...it is super noticeable on tv and it now looks like a play production is supposed to be happening instead of a basketball game. Why they ever changed it, I'm not sure

I haven't seen the new bleachers, but honestly, there might not even be an option to move them closer to the court. I assume they line up with the Parquet seats and it would just be the slope of the bleachers that would determine where the front was.

A few feet isn't going to affect how loud it gets on the court and based on pictures from the game, they should have the same ability to affect free throws as they used to.

An overreaction and an overaccommodation for the Pensl murder and the Randy assault

Is it really about Pencil? I can't even remember what supposed to have happened to him. Did a fan throw a cup at him or something?

I do remember when his entire season consisted of coming off the bench to try to injure ISU players.

He was stabbed by a student and still on life support.

If you watch Yellowstone - it was very similar to when Lloyd knifes Walker.

Considering that Hilton is going to undergo major renovations somewhat soon, I don't think they have plans to go back in time.

That was put on the WAY back burner after COVID lost revenues, Prohm - Otz buyouts and the uncertainty with the future of conference TV revenue. Plus, last I hear CyTown was a bigger priority to Jamie than Hilton as CyTown could bring in A lot more potential commercial real estate revenues.

What TJ is doing may change that. But there is A TON of uncertainty standing in the way of spending $25M on Hilton..

Here is a link for those who have forgot

I can live with all of the changes, but would like to see a new hanging scoreboard at some point. if you put a new standard size hanging scoreboard in Hilton that may be enough to light the whole place itself.

I'd love to see this as well!! Probably a $7-$9M project if you look at what Creighton put in almost a decade ago

Yeah, totally agree. On TV you can barely tell that we even have a balcony, let alone that we usually have it full to the rafters. At a time when so many schools struggle with hoops attendance, we really miss an opportunity to show off on the national stage with this.
