The ISU coaching change is BIG news around here, and should be getting most of the attention. But now that PR is in place and we're about a week from the game, I look for Outback coverage to pick up quite a bit. Especially when the team gets to Florida.

I mentioned the same thing last week.

Admit it or not, the Iowa bowl game (which should be a big deal after last season and how this year started) has been totally upstaged by the ISU coaching situation.

Hell, this story is the biggest sports story in Iowa ever, based on the amount of activity in the SoundOff phone/e-mail inboxes.

Is that a good thing? Well, some may think so (while laughing at Iowa) and other may point out the story is based on our coach deserting ISU without so much as a "thank you".

Not buying it. Like it or not, Iowa fans were paying just as much attention to the goings-on in Ames as everyone else in the state was. There isn't a single media outlet in the state that is going to talk about Iowa v. S. Carolina in the Outback Bowl for an entire month - Iowa State gave them something to talk about for 10 days or so.

It also didn't hurt that none of the Big 4 basketball teams had games last week - there literally was nothing else to talk about - Greg McDermott should be sending Chizik a Christmas card.

They came back from break to do sports, and Kiernan said something to the effect of "Iowa fans are upset that no one is talking about the Hawks" before handing it off to Hassel.

Unfortunately, when the Iowa grounds keepers flooded the field and purposely left the grass long, it slowed Iowa down as well.
