And what you would not give to have ISU there. It amazes me how clone fans like to belittle the Hawk accomplishments to make themselves feel better. If memory serves me correctly ISU has never played in a New Years bowl.
The International Bowl is on Jan 3, should we be impressed by that? Iowa's bowl isn't as much as an accomplishment as much as it is a gift. Per record, Big 11 standings and head to head, N-Western should have been in this bowl instead. This just happens to be another bowl game on New Year's day, all of them could be on New Years Day or could be on December whatever. It probably needs to be, it is not a significant bowl.
The Cap One Bowl (old Citrus Bowl) was quite often played on new years eve and sometimes New Years day. Only the top tear bowl games-Orange, Cotton, Sugar, Fiesta, Rose should be on Jan 1 or 2 with the NC game a couple days later.
If the bowl situation was the way it was 20 some years ago there would only be 18-21 bowl games and no conference affiliations with any of them. 21 is plenty of bowl games and would mean you need probably 9 wins in a 12 game season to be one (that would be a true accomplishment). If you look at the NFL, only 12 of 32 or 38% of the teams are in the playoffs, which generally means that teams are fairly good.. With 34 bowl games, more than 50% of the Div 1 teams are in a bowl.
