Phillip Fulmer interested per Cotlar

Maybe I should clarify my optimism about Fulmer (or any other coach)-

I don't have expectations of Fulmer, or pretty much any coach for that matter, getting us to a BCS game. Our history just doesn't support such an expectation. What I do think Fulmer can do for us is get us to the 8-9 win mark, bring in a better brand of recruits, bring in all kinds of money from excited donors that can give us a gigantic facelift to our facilities - basically, be the next level of tradition of football here at ISU.

My expectation isn't necessarily championships at this point - it's getting to the 8-9 win level regularly. I've seen the 6-7 win level already, I now want more.
 
Im not saying PF would be a bad hire, but like someone said earlier "PF has had the privelage of a prestigious program thats jam packed with talent... which is why he has the record he does, which is why hes won a national championship...10 years ago, which is why he competed for an SEC title on a regular basis. Not saying he wouldn't do good things here, but there will be a huge talent dropoff and nobody can be sure that hes a good enough "coach" to overcome that. Everyone should check this out. 95% of the players on here would have never came to ISU Fulmer or not... Just sayin Go to NFL players past and present

The few Tennessee fans I know were actually still Fulmer fans, but other fans saw the new breed of coaches coming into the SEC (Meyer, Richt, Saban, etc) and wanted in on the action... I think more of them just wanted change for the sake of change than to actually see Fulmer gone...

Cutcliffe was there for every game other than than fiesta bowl that year.

A lot of the decline when he left was due the to fact that our #1 recruit Eli Manning went with him. Without Coach Cut our QB postion struggled greatly. When cut returned to the program we had been through 5 qbs in 6 years, and the best shot we had was a junior when cut took back over.

I guess you're just listening to a fan that would kill to have the "down years" that some Tennessee fans are complaining about :wink:
 
Volfan1 - appreciate the insight. Valid points.

I think Fullmer would certainly be good for us. I also thing, we could be better off with a HC that has won with less talent.

Go to Volnation.com and ask how many were still fulmer fans. Many wanted him gone around the 2002 season. 99.9% of them were calling for his head before the 07 season.

usually happens when a coach is there for so long...but we would love to have em'

Urban Meyer started at Bowling Green before Utah hired him. Bob Stoops was DC at Florida before Oklahoma hired him. Nick Saban was the DC for the Cleveland Browns before Michigan State hired him. Les Miles was was the Cowboys tight ends coach before Oklahoma state hired him.

At ISU we can't afford to hire those top tier coaches when they are top tier coaches, so we need to get them before they become top tier coaches, IMO. That's where JP makes his money.

That's where he failed with Chizik. Or as I prefer to think of it, where Chizik failed ISU.

Exactly. Do people really think Fulmer with his $6 million in the bank is going to be motivated to travel all around the country to convince recruits to come to Ames? Recruiting and player evaluation is 80% of the battle at ISU. We need an up-and-comer who has something to prove.

I'm trying to think of an example of a big name coach who was fired at age 58 and went on to have success somewhere else. So far I keep thinking of guys like Lou Holtz, Johnny Majors, Bobby Knight.

Sorry, Cutlcliffe was not on the Tennessee staff in 2005 - he didn't rejoin Fulmer until 2006.

Here are some facts:

Tennessee 2005 (without Cutlcliffe) - 5-6 3-5 SEC)
Tennessee 2006 (with Cutcliffe) - 9-4 (5-3)
Tennessee 2007 (with Cutcliffe) - 10-4 (6-2)
Tennessee 2008 (without Cutcliffe) - 5-7 (3-5)

Pretty clear to me.
 
You should also check out what cut did with duke this year. His record was not great, but he did get that perinial loser to make a pretty significant inprovement.

Good point. While Tennessee and Fulmer were going in the dumper, Duke was taking off. Wish we could get him here...
 
This guy does have a point. I have not seen that name mentioned at all. I think it would be a rather quick move up the ladder from QB coach, to Duke HC to ISU HC in such a short span.

But there's another guy out there that moved up that quickly and seems to be doing alright.

Perhaps this is Pollard's rabbit...

Bingo. Don't let Tornado Man get you down... He won't be happy until Pollard is out the door and Mac is back coaching the Cyclones. I guess that means he will never be happy.
 
there might be a rumor that QUIRK FRIAINTZ from EIU maybe interested in the job.maybe the state board of rejects would give him a million ($) dollar raise and we would fulfIll our recruiting requirements with his ft madson farm club and he might get some very good recruits from the joliet illinois farm club. who knows ole quirk may just switch to iowa state so he can continue to beat EIU like danny mac used to own them.
