I dont think the big 12 made a mistake. None of the expansion candidates would have increased revenue (most would have diluted it) nor would they have saved the conference if OU\UT left.
The big 12's only real chance at saving itself from an OU\UT type loss wouldve been when there were rumors of poaching FSU\Clemson. But those rumors seem like just that, rumors, and theyre locked up now
Here's a hypothetical for everyone on nuclear meltdown mode. This is strictly in regards to Oklahoma because Texas is insignificant and have always been massive underachievers.
Let's say Cambpbell has 10 years left, the first 5 we continue like we have with Oklahoma and Texas, 8-10 win seasons, keep making good bowl games, but he just can't get over the Oklahoma hump. He either loses to them in the championship game again, or slips up against some other team which prevents us from even getting there. No Big 12 championships or playoffs.
The last 5 Oklahoma is gone, the Big 12 stays together with the remaining 8 and adds 2 other teams. Iowa St becomes the premier team in the conference under Campbell, wins at least a couple Big 12 titles and gets invited to the 12 team playoff at least once, multiple NFL picks, sold out games every Saturday.
What the hell is the difference??? Because now we cant play Oklahoma once or twice anymore? We weren't even competitive with them for like 30 years until Kyle Kempt and Matt Cambpell came along. Is it really all about the TV revenue driving all this? Who's to say Campbell won't stay or they find some other way to pony up his salary.
Another thing with recruiting, it's all relative, you guys act like our recruiting would take a hit, but so would every other team in the conference. There's still the same amount of players out there, we have added 2 new expansion teams to college football. Yeah, the overall talent of the conference will go down but it's relative. What's the worst case if that happens? We can beat Big 12 teams but can't compete with ghr Alabama and Clemsons? How is that any different than right now.

But you've said a lot of stupid things on this board (admittedly I have also said many stupid things on this board). Trying to justify why Campbell would stay in a ****** conference for less money is by far the stupidest thing either one of us have said.
That doesn’t seem to be how these things shake out though. Like I said it’s an arms race. If you aren’t moving forward you’re losing. Even if a conference has to take a chance that they wouldn’t have at this same time last year.
I don’t know, you said the best we could do was hiring a position coach of a G5 team after we fired Rhoads.
If it truly is an arms race for football supremacy, I want you to imagine the thought of the SEC adding Texas/OU and the B1G adding KU/ISU. Please just imagine that. It's not going to happen.
We will be hoping for a position coach when we are in a bad conference
I shouldn't bring this up, but it's almost midnight....remember how much fun I was when Hoiberg left? And how I thought it was a terrible thing for our basketball program (turns out I was right!)? This would be FAR worse.

The Big Ten has attempted multiple times to add Notre Dame as a full time member and ND is not an AAU member.
You seem to think the Big 12 is over. Why would Texas and OU leave a conference they own?????Or it will be all over
Nebraska was an AAU outlier when they joined, I believe, FWIW.
There is 0.0 chance the Big Ten adds ISU. None. There’s not another dollar of revenue by making the move. It would be better off standing pat than adding ISU, unfortunately.
I think it's possible but highly unlikely. I'm sure they're in no rush to make a move like ISU and the rest of the schools left behind will be.
I'd rather use the money to catapult Farley into the middle of Big Creek.
