Report: OU & Texas reach out to join SEC

I absolutely love the Cyclones, but we’ve been top 10 twice in our history, basketball won 2 games last year, our facilities are now just comparable to others (not elite), we don’t have a huge fanbase at all (although it’s an intensely loyal one), and our academics are plunging over the past 5 years (yes we are still AAU).

Of the 8 leftover schools we’d definitely rank behind KU and would be roughly comparable to Ok State, WV IMO. We could be a bit above K-State and TT, maybe. For sure we have more to market than either of the small private schools though.
Every single thing you said is painfully true.

Hope he isn’t wasting his time there and is calling Gene Smith and Barry Alvarez.
I hope he talks to them first to make sure we don’t step into a mess that we don’t need to. Find out what you are dealing with first, don’t go frantically chasing randoms.

I still don't think the Big 10 takes us, but ISU needs to be proactive and go to them with hat in hand. This conference is done, even if Texass and OU to SEC doesn't happen. It is clear they are not in it for the long haul. They have it as good as its going to get for them in this conference and it still isn't good enough. We need to watch out for ISU and hope the B1G is feeling charitable. We have something really special going in football and the only chance to save it is the Big 10 route IMO.

“hat in hand” “charitable”. Goodness, this is our plan? Woof! Not disagreeing, just goes to show how fragile our place is.

After the last Missile Crisis, the fact that we (and other comparable schools) are still where we are should tell everyone what they need to know about the options that were available at that time.

I get that they took Maryland, but what is in it for N. Carolina and Virginia. Leave a conference that they helped form, both are BB schools first and it takes them away from Duke.

Neither school needs the money like Maryland and Rutgers, so why move when they do not have too. UCONN is going downward in FB and left the AAC conference to play in a BB conference, so they are off the board.

The big 10 approaches both, makes their case, and both say "thanks, but we are happy running the ACC." They will not want to take ISU, there will be no one left to take but us that is an AAU school and is decent in sports.

So its ISU and KU to the Big 10
I agree with this. The move to the B1G was terrible for Maryland. They’re far worse off in football and were a national brand in basketball but are now irrelevant. They lost all of their historic rivalries. And Notre Dame brings a lot to the ACC.

I would agree with everything you said, except I would say we are by far the best cultural and geographic fit with the B1G, and this decision is going to be football related, and the state of KUs football program does matter to some degree. Don't get me wrong, I think it is still a long shot the B1G wants us, but I think we stack up pretty favorably to all the other remaining Big XII schools.

Even when the B1G appeased them and placed the bball tournament in DC, it wasn't highly attended.

Sure, but there’s also a scenario in which the B1G stands pat rather than adding us and KU and further dividing revenue. I think we’d fit wonderfully there but that’s not enough. It has to be mutual interest.

I'm almost to the point I don't even care what happens anymore. Money, power, and greed just have to destroy everything we know and love eventually..... it's unavoidable.

If OU and Texas leave, and ISU ends up in the MAC or the Mountain West.... I just hope college football suffers a quick and horrible death and just goes away.

Guys... the B1G isn't taking us on. It's the Big 12 or bust... and with Texas with 2 feet out the door and OU with 1, it's not looking great.

This is why I could see the 8 leftovers sticking it out together and trying to add 2-4 schools, when other options are presented. Maybe KU and us will get swept up by the B1G…it’s possible.

I agree. I don't think the B1G will be interested in any of us. We are going to be taking more than we bring to the table. But if for some reason they are compelled to add more teams for whatever reason I do think ISU would be high on that list.

I think KU’s football struggles matter in the sense that if KU is a target for Big Ten expansion, ISU with strong football facilities and recent success is a better pairing with KU than a school like UConn.

And I do think that if the Big Ten expands and can’t pull an ACC school, they’ll go after Kansas.

A question is, would the Big Ten try to pull Missouri away from the SEC to go along with Kansas, and would Missouri be upset enough about the addition of Texas to the SEC that they would jump ship?

Sure - when thinking through who team #16 would be, it’s tough to see some of those traditional ACC schools leaving. But there’s no requirement for them to go to 16.

Well the Big XII is done. The B1G may be a hail mary, but when that's your only shot you go ahead and chuck the damn ball and hope for the best.
