Head Coach

I'll be shocked if Auburn hires Chiz, but at this point I hope they do. He'a another Donnie Duncan (good defensive coordinator at a national powerhouse). JP blew it big time by not hiring Brian Kelly, and he needs a committee with smart football people on it to help him make football and basketball hires if needed because JP has NO experience in either sport. Turner Gill is this year's Brian Kelly, and I think he would come to ISU, unlike Patterson. He may use us as a stepping stone to get to NU, but if he has success here he just may want to stay in gratitude for us giving him a head coaching opportunity he certainly deserves. Winning here is not impossible because the big 12 north is usually wide open and we only have to play the conference powers 2 out of 4 years. I just hope we know what will happen in the next few days so we can move on, and with the way this Auburn interview was handled I hope it is without Gene.

So if Chizik does go to Auburn and if this is a complete an accurate list, that means we might be the only BCS school open right now? I guess if you are looking for a bright spot there it is. That also means Gill was passed over by Syracuse and Auburn.

Not a terrible option at all, but if we're the only BCS school looking for a head coach, and it's obvious that Gill is shopping around, I would think we could land him. Gill has done "more with less" than Croom, imo, and we know he likes the midwest.

if we are the only bcs school shopping and gill isn't interested, that about tells you were this job is on the coaching ladder.

Barry Alvarez have any tread left on the tires?

He wouldnt be an all bad hire. He is respected, he would be a name hire. He has built a program. He also has an eye for hiring quality asst coaches. He could bring someone in to be a coach in waiting.

I think they should give Loney a shot at head coach. I'd like to see what an offensive coach can do. We had defensive head coaches for a long time.

Loney has had my vote since we started tanking with McCarney.

He wants to be here, his family is here, he is one of us + he would take our current offensive situation from good to great.

You're saying it like you already know he isn't interested... Obviously he has major ties with Nebraska, but I don't think he's holding his breath on that job, as Bo is in a bowl in year 1. If Gill isn't interested in us after trying to get the Syracuse and SDSU jobs, I don't know what I'll think anymore...

my criteria (not worth much but hey its a message board):
1) head coaching experience
2) has turned a program around
3) big 12 / big 8 ties...enough sec and big ten crap
4) proven offensive system...we will need it in this conference
5) experience recruiting to a "tough sell"
6) honesty
7) no ties to uni

no, we haven't even asked him. I am saying if we approach him as the only bcs option left and he says not interested then we are HURTING as a program after he tried to get the syracuse and sdsu jobs.

Top 5 Coaching Prospects from Smaller Schools

This is a list of five head coaches in Div-IA(Or whatever it is now) at smaller schools (i.e. teams in Sun Belt, CUSA, MAC, etc) who will soon find themselves coaching in a major conference.

5. Derek Dooley, La Tech - This choice will probably be a couple more seasons away from moving up. Dooley had a good year with the Bulldogs last year, finishing 5-7 in his first season as head coach. Something that could help Dooley is his family history. His uncle Bill Dooley was head coach at North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest and his father is the legendary Vince Dooley, former head coach of the Georgia Bulldogs. Many speculate that Georgia will be where Derek will one day wind up. It is possible, but I think Dooley will have to coach one more team in a bigger conference (maybe a lower Pac-10 or Big East team) and have success before he could coach Georgia.

4. Skip Holtz, East Carolina - This is another example of a head coach with a famous father. Skip, who's father is former Notre Dame head Coach Lou Holtz, has done an outstanding job at Eastern Carolina. Holtz is 20-17 in his three years at East Carolina and has led the Pirates to back-to-back bowl games, their first since 2000-2001. Expect Holtz to become a head coach at a different school has early as the end of this season.

3. Butch Jones, Central Michigan - Last year on FanNation I publicly endorsed Butch Jones to become the new head coach at West Virginia. The Mountaineers decided to pass on their former WRs coach and stay within the coaching staff and hire Bill Stewart. Jones has stayed on track with his predecessor Brian Kelly, leading the Chippewas to another MAC title. I think if Central Michigan wins another MAC title, expect Central Michigan to have a different head coach.

2. Bronco Mendenhall, BYU - Mendenhall is doing an outstanding job here, and I personally like him better than my #1 pick because the Cougars were struggling before Bronco was hired. Mendenhall is a ridiculous 28-10 as head coach at BYU, and many predict that the Cougars could go undefeated. I see this as very likely, but as a result of not losing, Mendenhall will be gone.
1. Chris Petersen, Boise State - After Dan Hawkins left Boise for Colorado, I felt like the Broncos would not be as good. Turns out I was wrong, as Boise State went undefeated and beat an overrated Oklahoma team in the Fiesta Bowl. Petersen backed up his first year with a 10-3 record, which is very respectable. Hawaii has lost Colt Brennan and June Jones, so many (including I) think that the WAC is Boise State's for the taking. If the Broncos have another great year and find themselves in another BCS game, expect the Big 12, SEC or Big 10(maybe even the NFL!) to come calling for Petersen.

i like boronco or chris peterson both come from small schools whom we can out-bid for their services.
maybe we can pay bsu back for the humanitarian bowl or maybe get bronco to come run our 'o'

Barry Alvarez have any tread left on the tires?

Barry is the AD at Wisconsin. Jamie burned his bridges with Barry by stealing other members of his staff away to come to ISU with him. If Barry ever wants to get back into coaching it is not likely to be at ISU and it certainly won't be in a job where he reports to Pollard.

Re: New Coach-Prospects

We should just pull out the list from 2 years ago.

Brian Kelly, Tim Brewster and Bo Pellini are all still available, right?

I liked Loney 2 years ago, and thought he would replace Chizik after Chizik built the program into something more. If he could bring in a decent DC and solid recruiter, then I think we could have something in a few years with longevity (5 years at least)
