Carrchamp--Fan Vote for Hodge

I think the key with David is playing the long game. Keep him healthy and make sure he is rested for nationals each year. We are seeing the effects of the grind for the guys that are around for 5, and 6, and 7 years. For some of our guys, it has obviously not worked out in their later years. I know everyone has their own opinion of Cael ( or Carl, or Bael, depending on your point of view) but he does seem to have his top flight stars healthy, rested, and focused when it matters on Friday and Saturday nights during nationals. This has proven to be one of his very strong points as a coach, and I think it is the sensible approach if we want to get to the next level. Here’s hoping that Carr and Dresser and Metcalf can do the same; and lead us to where we want to go.
Cael is a huge Dbag for what he did to ISU. And he also seems like a smug prick.

That said, he is one of the best coaches in all of sports. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a moron.

Get over it and stop being a crybaby.

Voted for David as I am a Cyclone fan.

As a wrestling fan, I think Gable Steveson deserves the Hodge. Was extremely dominant in a very tough weight class. Spencer Lee was also insanely dominant, but I give Gable the edge as Hwt was a much tougher weight than 125 this year. Plus Spencer won last year and it's nice to share :)
I couldn't vote for Steveson given his antics. He's not someone I would want my kids idolizing!

1. Spencer
2. Gable
3. David
4. Brooks
5. O’Conner
6. RBY

The ranking above is actually pretty clear statistically, based on virtually any metric. 1 and 2 are relatively close.
I would have to put RBY higher. Maybe even above Carr. Beating Fix is quite the accomplishment. David gets knocked (a bit unfairly) because he didn't have to go through Deakin.

RBY was really good, don’t get me wrong, and beating Fix is a really, really good win, but the season long metrics don’t support RBY over any of the other 5. He and O’Conner are close, but O’Conner even has better metrics.

One example. RBY only had 5 bonus point wins this year, and none were against ranked guys. O’Conner had 6 with none against ranked guys. Carr had 13 bonus point wins with 5 of those against ranked guys.

RBY wrestled just 5 ranked guys, or 36% of his matches, all year. Carr wrestled 12 (60%).

There are a lot of other metrics to look at also. Average match length is one. RBY had a shorter average match length than Brooks, but that’s it. Carr’s average match length is almost a full minute shorter than RBY’s.

Wow! that's a big jump.

I assume that's Hayden going up, not Trent trying to suck down?

Hidlay to 174 is interesting. That weight really isn't clearing out much, with Starocci being a freshman and Kemerer coming back, Labriola only being a junior, along with any other seniors deciding to return.

Maybe he just wants to strictly focus on wrestling and less on weight management. Also probably makes training with his brother a little easier for him.

This was all probably covered in that podcast NCSU released, but I haven't listened to it.

Hilday made the announcement on the #PackMentality Pop-Ins Podcast saying, "I want to give everything to my brother, and the best way that I can do that is to go up to 174 and wrestle. So, next year I will be wrestling for NC State at 174 lbs."

Im actually helping him pack his bags as we speak. Can’t be having a kid get on a post national championship interview saying Iowa state is place to come, train with the best and rebuild the program with him. That’s transfer talk.
I'm just waiting for someone to complain about David's smile or say he celebrated too much after he won

Thanks for posting. Sounds like a guy heading to PSU ;)

Wonder if it also has a little to do with freestyle weight alignment also.

You're absolutely right. I forgot that the Hodge was a season long award and not just most outstanding for the tournament.

I am still on a long slow burn myself, so I enjoyed this post, thank you very much. Not looking to start to plow the same ground again, but ISU gave much to Cael, and the magnanimous Bobby Douglas even stepped aside for him, but in the end he turned his back on ISU and headed for money and titles, taking much talent with him. I have been watching Cyclone wrestling since the days of Dan Gable, Chris Taylor, Carl Adams, Frank Santana, Joe Zuspann and Johnnie Jones, just to name a few, so I do have some perspective. The program has still not recovered from Cael leaving. I just enjoyed seeing crablegs with a comment that I could appreciate. Yes, it would appear that Cael is a great recruiter and coach, and his wrestlers seem to be relaxed and enjoy what they do. But I am not going to just 'get over it' as it was a pretty deep cut to many of us that cared. If you can, more power to you, congratulations, but I will probably always be at least a bit bitter about that one.
