ISU Coaching Poll

Who would be the best person to be ISU’s HC?

Prohm beat a bad team at some point in his time here at ISU, we should keep him based on that one game I watched.
Outside of beating undefeated San Diego State near the end of last season, I have not been impressed with anything TJ has done to date as a HC. He either needs more time to prove it first, or just isn't cut out for a P6 gig. I don't want Pollard to hand him the keys at this point.

I’m definitely not obsessed with him but I also don’t understand the hate. ISU assistant, good recruiting success here, knows what it takes to win in Ames, low major head coaching success, current mid-major head coach (although not lighting it on fire there just yet). We could do A LOT worse than TJ. (I also think we could do better).

Serious question: Is it hate to question whether a coach can succeed at ISU when that coach: (1) hasn't won outside of at a low major that already had one of the best players in the conference; and (2) has struggled at a mid-major where recruiting has been rumored to get some a$$i$tance?

I think all of the coaches to which we are linked have some question marks and risks, and I don't think any of them are no brainers. While I love TJ's connections to ISU and his past recruiting success, I honestly can't say whether he would be successful at ISU or not. So, in my opinion, it is confusing why some see the hire as a no brainer.

Maybe Campbell has rubbed off on me, but I'm about the process on this one. I'd much prefer a thorough search where all interested candidates are equally evaluated, the best one is hired and ISU connections are just one of many factors considered.

Now, if TJ is hired, I will support and root for him 100% as he'll be ISU's coach, but I won't consider likelihood of success as a no brainer. He could succeed or he could fail.

Miller has been there 4 years and has yet to do better than .500 in the conference, and that was his first year. He consistently has blue chip recruits and does nothing with them. Watch the Rutgers game last night. Horrible Xs and Os and the team quit on him in the second half. He does not hold his players accountable on the court through playing time, but does throw them under the bus in the media. Could we do worse? Yes. But nobody should think that Miller would offer better results at ISU than he has delivered at Indiana, and frankly those results are worse than what we have experienced through Prohm's tenure.

Small edit - who cares if he happens to have Iowa's number if every other team in the Big 10 happens to have his number.
Miller = about as attractive as any other candidate on the fans short list of names. Which is not very attractive. I like Craig Smith the best. As far as Iowa goes, you're right it's not very important. I just want to finally beat them in something.

Exactly, that's like a pitcher that strikes out Mike Trout twice in one inning. That's great, right? No, 8 other guys are lighting you up.

And no way am I comparing Iowa to Mike Trout. Probably should have used Mike Stanton as an example instead. All or nothing type guy.

Nick Punto. Not very good, but will slide head first into first base every time just to pi$$ you off.

As a Cyclone and Dallas Cowboys fan The Prescott contract or trade drama and the Prohm fire or retain conversations is exhausting.

In terms of coaches I don't know why we wouldn't take a long term assistant at a good program. Why not Jerome Tang at Baylor. I think his upside exceeds most options here. He will likely have options at the end of the season. I would hope guys like that are considered. Drew has proven to be a very good coach, and Tang has been learning what it takes to coach successfully under Drew for well over a decade.

I can't speak to the a$$istance part, but yes, it's reasonable to scrutinize a coach's body of work in that way. I don't think that demonstrates dislike for a candidate or suggests a person thinks he couldn't succeed.

One thing is for sure, with all the options, critiques, and overall lack of consensus, Prohm's retainment numbers gradually have gone up since the start of this thread. Not by a large margin, but inarguably 'up'. If this thread vets 'every' option out there with no popular choice, I wouldn't be surprised if that trend continues.

But pollards retainment numbers have gone down ;)

I honestly don't get the TJ fanboying. Very underwhelming choice.

I think the money JP is going to be willing to spend is going to leave us with similar candidates, I don't think the choice is going to blow anyone away. It'll be similar to the Prohm hire.

He has beat Utah State this year. That is a good win. Outside of that his other 6 conference wins are against teams with a combined conference record of 8-42. He has no good non con wins so at the moment it's Utah State to go on.
