ISU Coaching Poll

Who would be the best person to be ISU’s HC?

John Beilein intrigues me, given the great teams he had at WV and Michigan. He'd need to have an assistant under him who'd be the heir apparent though, even if unofficially, along with a top recruiter since he's probably not the most relatable coach out there due to age.

I’m currently watching UNLV vs Fresno State and this UNLV team looks like it’s coached by Prohm. A lot of high screens, players out of position on both ends, and a lack of offensive sets. It’s a hard **** no on hiring T.J. The talent might improve, but the coaching doesn’t look like it would be a lot different.

Edit:
They don’t seem to box out and stand around watching on rebound opportunities also.

Just do not get the obsession with Otzelberger.

I’m definitely not obsessed with him but I also don’t understand the hate. ISU assistant, good recruiting success here, knows what it takes to win in Ames, low major head coaching success, current mid-major head coach (although not lighting it on fire there just yet). We could do A LOT worse than TJ. (I also think we could do better).

And yet if you take the opinions on a lot of the posters on here, he worked for 2 unsuccessful coaches and one successful coach here. Hopefully he learned the right things.

Who would be worse?

No one will be more supportive of TJ than me when he is named the head coach, but the way his supporters act is a real turn off.

He worked for 3 unsuccessful coaches if you count his time in Washington.

Every coach that has had his name thrown out that is realistic around here has his pluses and minuses. For me personally, it's just that his strengths and weaknesses so closely appear to match Prohm's. That's unfair to him but I've seen enough of this.

I don't know the full context behind what happened last night but TJ and The Runnin Rebels losing to a horrible Fresno State team doesn't get me excited to have him as a candidate. I've watched UNLV a few times this year but just looking at their scores, they sort of remind me of us this year outside of having 8 more wins (I know they play in the MWC). They're either getting the doors blown off them or they're keeping it close.

Honestly, I think we need to prepare ourselves for Prohm being back. Excitement will be way down, but I just have a hard time seeing JP make a move on him this year. I voted 'Other', as I like the idea of going after a Matta if possible, but my gut tells me we will have Prohm when fall rolls around. Outside chance I guess that he pulls a McD and takes another job.

The difference is we are in year 6, and they are in year 2. Not many people walk into coaching positions and are given stacked rosters. Even if they are given good talent, it might not be the kind that fits a coaches system. Rebuilding takes time. I have no expectations that next coach shows up and wins right away. What I hope to see is effort, an identity, and smart plays with under 5 to go. Even some of that might take time as our current players don't know how to win. They dont know how to close games at this level.

I know UNLV is in an entirely different situation than us.. I was just saying this year for TJ doesn't make me absolutely ecstatic for him to be our next head coach.

In another thread, people were bringing up Archie Miller, which I would be a hard pass on for ISU. As a fan, I peruse their boards often and they are struggling with the same discussions that we are. The big problem there is that Miller's buyout is more than $10 Mil this year - dropping to $3M in March of 2022. They are convinced that they can't make a move unless Brad Stevens magically is ready to go. Looking at ISU, can someone remind what the buyout for Prohm is and when it drops? I know it has been mentioned, but I cannot find it.

Was watching this as well, and had pretty much the exact same takeaway. And woof...that Fresno State team wasn't even that good. TJ can't or at least shouldn't be the answer.

I am starting to get this feeling that he might be back as well. I even think we win a game down the stretch here, and that will be his ticket to come back (assuming he doesn't resign). JP is on the lookout for a replacement but between finances and lack of great candidates, I think will wait a year, save some money, and make a really good hire.

I won’t be happy if he retains Prohm.

However, I will also be popping a large bowl of popcorn and reading CF the rest of that day/night

King MaClure had high praise for Daniyal Robinson the other night. Even mentioned he is one of the best assistants in the entire sport. While I have a hard time buying this given the outcomes we've had under his watch, why not toss his name into the hat, aside from the obvious no HC experience?

Don't know much about Miller except that he seems to have Iowa's number and the IU basketball fan base is almost as bad as NU fans in terms of they think they're still in their glory days. Dead blue bloods of their respective sports. We could probably do worse than Miller.

I might be wrong, but I think results the rest of the season are negligible. My hunch is Pollard already has made a decision one way or the other (informally).

The rest of the way, no. I would hope he’s taken the results this year into consideration.

If he retains Prohm he made that decision a long time ago, maybe even before the season.

I agree with you to an extent. TJ isn't some slam dunk candidate like some say. He's also not a terrible candidate like others have portrayed.

Miller has been there 4 years and has yet to do better than .500 in the conference, and that was his first year. He consistently has blue chip recruits and does nothing with them. Watch the Rutgers game last night. Horrible Xs and Os and the team quit on him in the second half. He does not hold his players accountable on the court through playing time, but does throw them under the bus in the media. Could we do worse? Yes. But nobody should think that Miller would offer better results at ISU than he has delivered at Indiana, and frankly those results are worse than what we have experienced through Prohm's tenure.

Small edit - who cares if he happens to have Iowa's number if every other team in the Big 10 happens to have his number.
