This years ISU season reminds me a lot of Iowa's 2019 season. 9-3 vs 10-3. Bowl game vs #22 USC and vs #25 Oregon (Pac12 teams that pretty much sucked) ISU with 3 losses all to top 20 teams, Iowa with 3 losses all top 15 teams.
Obviously the big difference was the pandemic. With the Big10 and Pac12 conferences pretty much screwing over the teams and their season none of them played enough games to get ranked (outside OSU which is ********, they didn't deserve the playoffs, even if they win the whole dang thing).
This isn't a dig at ISU, as ISU took advantage of the situation for sure. It showed discipline and heart to stay COVID free all season long, so congrats to those players and coaches for staying strong this year.

No. What I'm saying is that there is no way that last years bowl loss to ND wouldn't have entered the minds of those on the CFP committee if it had came down to choosing between the Clones and ND for the final playoff spot this year. That's just human nature. Gary Barta would obviously have lobbied for you but no way would he have won that argument.
Just a crazy weird year. Thanks God that all the major conference got it right in BB and are all playing full seasons.

If Hawkeye fans want to compare years to theirs. This year for us aligns with their 2009 season. If we would had our regular schedule you have Iowa, UNLV and South Dakota. There is 2 more non cons. So our reg season is 10-2/11-1 area. They didn’t play in a CCG and proceeded to go play a bad Georgia tech team in a NY6 bowl. This is their only modern day NY6 win. Modern being in the last 50 years (being generous)

Agree. Most years in the Big 12, ISU would be Champs. ISU actually finished alone in 1st at the end of the reg season. When Has Iowa ever done that? The mid 1980s? Iowa likes to forget that their Orange Bowl season they finished the reg season with 2 losses and didn't have a champ game to play in. Played a bad Ga Tech Team. To them that was the stuff elite programs are made of.
If you want to discuss hypotheticals, a one loss Iowa State would have absolutely gotten in over A&M. The committee wasn't going to put A&M up against Bama again and Iowa States resume would was significantly stronger.
Forgot to include in my prior post that another similarity is that GT had illegal players in their championship game so they should not have been in the orange bowl since the win was vacated. 9-5 Clemson was who was supposed to be.
