I have mentioned before that my wife and I grew up in SE Iowa which gets fed nothing but Iowa propaganda all year long. She was raised a hawk fan and I will admit it was easier to follow the hawks and support them than it was Iowa State. However, I came to my senses and went to ISU and have never looked back. Since my wife and I have been dating and now married for 2.5 years I have always tried to slowly convert her into becoming a Cyclone. She goes to Drake and does not have any ties to Iowa, other than being raised that way. Her family is still die hard iowa fans. Over the years she has cheered for both teams and will admit that she knows more about Iowa State athletics (having to live with me)...and seems to cheer for ISU over iowa in sports other than Football and Mens Bball. However, she still always cheers for iowa over ISU in the most popular sports.
I am starting to see even more support for the Cyclones this year. She speaks about the ISU teams using "we" and iowa as "they." But still wore black and gold during the ISU-iowa football game this year.
The hawks helped my case this weekend. We were traveling up to Rochester to visit my wife's sister for the weekend and met a lot of iowa vehicles traveling up to their game against minny. My car (avatar) is not excessively decorated in Iowa State material unless we are traveling to an ISU game, so it was as it appears with only an ISU license plate identifying us as Cyclones. I passed several vehicles with iowa license plates, but as I approached one black SUV with hawkeye plates the back seat window rolled down and three hands appear with middle fingers extended. I kept my pace and my cool and just drove on past. As we passed the front seat the driver made some "cool" face and kept pointing to the hawk symbol on his hat. I just drove on past. I made some comment to my wife about typical hawk fans and she said oh...ISU fans would do the same thing. In Ames for last year's ISU-iowa game she wore a hawkeye shirt and I asked her how ISU fans treated her when she was in Ames wearing an iowa shirt. She replied, "oh yeah." She had no problems with ISU fans, and was not treated rudely at all. I will not say that all ISU fans are angels...we do have our bad apples, but as a whole ISU fans are definitely more respectable. My wife has a new outlook on iowa fans.
