Hawkeyes helping to convert my wife

I have mentioned before that my wife and I grew up in SE Iowa which gets fed nothing but Iowa propaganda all year long. She was raised a hawk fan and I will admit it was easier to follow the hawks and support them than it was Iowa State. However, I came to my senses and went to ISU and have never looked back. Since my wife and I have been dating and now married for 2.5 years I have always tried to slowly convert her into becoming a Cyclone. She goes to Drake and does not have any ties to Iowa, other than being raised that way. Her family is still die hard iowa fans. Over the years she has cheered for both teams and will admit that she knows more about Iowa State athletics (having to live with me)...and seems to cheer for ISU over iowa in sports other than Football and Mens Bball. However, she still always cheers for iowa over ISU in the most popular sports.

I am starting to see even more support for the Cyclones this year. She speaks about the ISU teams using "we" and iowa as "they." But still wore black and gold during the ISU-iowa football game this year.

The hawks helped my case this weekend. We were traveling up to Rochester to visit my wife's sister for the weekend and met a lot of iowa vehicles traveling up to their game against minny. My car (avatar) is not excessively decorated in Iowa State material unless we are traveling to an ISU game, so it was as it appears with only an ISU license plate identifying us as Cyclones. I passed several vehicles with iowa license plates, but as I approached one black SUV with hawkeye plates the back seat window rolled down and three hands appear with middle fingers extended. I kept my pace and my cool and just drove on past. As we passed the front seat the driver made some "cool" face and kept pointing to the hawk symbol on his hat. I just drove on past. I made some comment to my wife about typical hawk fans and she said oh...ISU fans would do the same thing. In Ames for last year's ISU-iowa game she wore a hawkeye shirt and I asked her how ISU fans treated her when she was in Ames wearing an iowa shirt. She replied, "oh yeah." She had no problems with ISU fans, and was not treated rudely at all. I will not say that all ISU fans are angels...we do have our bad apples, but as a whole ISU fans are definitely more respectable. My wife has a new outlook on iowa fans.

So typical of some Hawk fans I know. As if he is on the team or something. Someone please tell him that Kirk Ferentz ain't coming to his funeral...

So, let me get this straight. You passed "several" vehicles, and yet take this one as representative of all of Hawk fans?

I've never been so embarassed as a few years ago, after the Iowa-ISU game to pass some drunk frat boy repeatedly shouting "**** the Hawks!" at the top of his lungs...as women and small children walked by.

And that was after we won.

More of my point that here we were just driving, ISU is not playing iowa and they are being idiots. Still not necessary but I would be more understanding if it was at an ISU-iowa game or we had just played them...but they are on their way up to Minnesota to play the gophers and they feel it necessary to attack cyclone fans.

My family and I walked down "frat row" after the 2005 win over Iowa, and I was actually scared for many of the Iowa fans walking along the same route. Never heard so many "F Iowa" or "Go back to Iowa City A holes" in my life.

The point is, every school has their fair share of classless fans.

Yep. And I suppose that they probably didn't have an open cooler in the vehicle, and hadn't been feeling their oats (or barley). They were on their way to an Iowa game, after all. There are jerks everywhere. Doesn't matter what colors they're wearing.

So only the one vehicle did this? What does that say of the several others you passed and didn't get a reaction from them? Sounds like you're looking for something to complain about.

My guess is that of all the cars you passed, this particular vehicle simply wasn't happy that you were driving dangerously by speeding by everybody.

I think I found the root of the problem.

Yup, that's it.

While it is true that all fanbases have their jackholes and ISU fans are going to have a rough time in IC on gameday and Hawk fans are going to have a rough time in Ames on gameday, I will back your observation that on any given day outside of a game setting that Hawk fans are far more obnoxious, condescending and rude than ISU fans. I have witnessed it from the little sheep Hawk fans in our schools that practically spit on a child wearing anything ISU to adult Hawk fans that seem to have no control over their ability to make a snide remark at every opportunity to an ISU fan.

I'm guessing that the massive fan base advantage that the Hawkeyes have over the Cyclones empowers and emboldens them to think that being rude is an ok thing.

Example = A man and a woman cheating on their significant other in the bathroom stall at the game...:cute::wideeyed:

Uh oh, someone is trying to get this thread shut down too!

On another note-the Frat comments are hilarious and never get old . I can understand how no "normal" male would ever do this and liken this to how all Iowa fans are labeled trailer trash (even if I may agree with that part)

In Ames Cyclonesrule91 and I were driving back from the game up on Beach Street and played the fight song or something with the window down and had some idiot Hawk throw a full beer and just barely miss the back of my vehicle. In bred Hawk fans are everywhere!!!

Yup, that's it.

Of course it was the frat boys. The dormies were either sitting in their dorm room or went back home to see their mommies!!

(Disclaimer : Just want to get the dormies vs frat boys discussion going. It has been awhile.)
