Kirk Ferentz getting sued for being racist

Peter Jok's moped received more airtime than this whole situation over in Iowa City. I get that the media doesn't want to start making a bunch of assumptions but at this point there are certainly conversations that could be had. I understand why they are ignoring it but I certainly don't agree with it.

Getting FOIA requests granted isn't an easy process. Sorry but I bet these guys are working on stuff. At least the ones that aren't furloughed. I have just gotten sick of blame the media crap. After a certain president attacking press for four years I am sick of it. Two of the writers that cover the team did a two hour podcast on the issues. One of them talked to 3 former hawkeyes about the program.

Mark Morehouse has filed a FOIA.

Well it looks like that site somebody posted has been updated with a lot of the player's messages and DJK's statement. https://americaneedsequality.com/

Would be a lot harder for the media to ignore all this if that started making the rounds on social media.
Whoever created that site (I have no idea who it could be) would probably get more traction from a wider base, and a higher rate of social media sharing, if they removed the Trump references and keep the focus on KF and the Hawkeye program. Just a thought to consider the objective of what the site is trying to accomplish. There are plenty of Trump supporters who are not racist and are appalled by KF's program right now, yet they will decline to share this due to the unnecessary inclusion of Trump-bashing in the website. I don't want to argue about the validity of the Trump-bashing...just pointing out to know the objective and stay laser-focused on it. Scope creep can often be counter-productive.

I don't think people understand what a total journalistic failure this is for local media. Keep in mind...we're talking large-scale racism accusations at a public university. This isn't just sports, it's legitimately news, doubly so in the national environment we're in at this moment.

As best I can tell, there's been almost no original reporting - just rehashing all these tweets. No FOIA requests, no assigning news reporters with much more experience chasing down complex stories like these (because this crosses over from sports into news when a public institution has major accusations of racism), no seeking comment from the university president or administration who oversees diversity/equity issues, no following up with accusers to elaborate on their allegations, no quotes from politicians, no inquiries with state government (civil rights commissions, etc.), no quotes from experts on racism at the local or national level. None of that. Reporters should have their hair on fire to get hold of this stuff. Instead, the tone *immediately* turned to "listening" and reconciliation while the accusations were still coming forth.
.

You know who would normally be ALL OVER a story like this? A college paper with typically younger, liberal-leaning journalists.

Like the Daily Iowan maybe.

If this was the Tippie School of Business department, it would be front page in the DI every day forever. Careers get made off this kind of story.

It's been just as bad for journalists failing to use their platforms to demand answers. No opinion pages have written on this, that I'm aware of. No sports figures have publicly demanded comment from Barta, or talked about how inadequate Ferentz's answers have been. While it's been widely speculated that Doyle will go, has anyone locally demanded it? Has anyone locally seriously suggested Kirk or Brian's jobs should be in jeopardy? All we get are half-hearted retweets of former players with no additional commentary.

And that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. The failure is total.

I actually listened to Morehouse and Docterman on the On Iowa podcast yesterday. In all fairness, they just totally wore a lot of the issues with the press here.

The bashing on the media is just tiresome. How do you know there hasn't been any FOIA requests? How do you know they haven't sough comments from people?

I can only speak for myself but I listened to Moorehouse and Dochterman talk about how much crap they get from the Iowa coaches and Iowa fans anytime they speak somewhat unflattering of that program. We all saw HN take down an article and the owner completely bash his writer on the radio. We all saw what the Iowa fans did to him on twitter.

I barely heard Keith and Andy speaking about it on the radio yesterday. The band story went on for awhile.

For whatever reason I think people feel there is a large double standard on how the media reports Iowa and how the media reports Iowa State. Honestly that says more about the coaches and administration at Iowa State and the coaches and administration at Iowa than it does the media.

I do think people are just tired of the double standard and are taking it out on the media fairly or unfairly.

That is a great point and I see they removed those references sometime this morning, at least last time I checked.

What do you mean they "wore" them?

After listening to Moorehouse, this isn't ending anytime soon for Iowa. If the FOIA's that were filed show Kirk was made aware of these issues over the years, it could get ugly for him.

Who the **** are you talking about? Those comments are my feelings not a response to a question from a racist enabler.

Your comment below and the comment below that are apples and oranges. I dont think he is a racist enabler but he is definitely trolling this whole situation pretty hard.

As a State fan I believe Iowa returning their racist clan damages the program the most severely in the long run.

As a human being I want to see justice for these players and their persecutors brought to light for the racists they have shown to be.

At this point for our own benefit (recruiting, Iowa fans desperately want him gone, etc) do we want him to get actually fired?

Can somebody make a concise list of attributed quotes by former players about the racism and links to the most damning info? Asking to help a friend with something.

Here’s another former players parent timely blog post that was posted three days ago

P.S. —- Dudes just mad his son couldn’t ever get any playing time.

Super P.S. —- You’ve probably never heard of the player so I guess it won’t matter.

here’s an excerpt-

And by the way - YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN. YOU SHOULD HAVE KNOWN - IT WAS AND IS YOUR JOB TO KNOW. Racism and discrimination are not new topics. These are not new to anyone who has been paying attention over the past 40 years. These are not realities that anyone is even debating at this point in history. It is real and has been real for a long time and we all know that. MAYBE things were just going too well sitting at the top. MAYBE no one was saying anything, no one was complaining, no donor making a fuss or MAYBE profits and outcomes were fine so why look any closer to the behavior of some of your own people. MAYBE. And so it was easy to act like you didn’t understand, that you did not know, or maybe if you were seeing these things, MAYBE you didn’t think they were wrong and truly believed that they were not racist or discriminatory. MAYBE.

But with your great power (and big bucks) comes GREAT RESPONSITBILITY AND GREAT ACCOUNTABILITY and if you failed in that responsibility consistently over time, then I ask you, what does it mean now to be accountable for that failure? What are you going to do now other than say you are sorry, appoint a committee to review it, and promise to listen better? Yes, I thank you for being willing to listen now, when the media and entire world is watching, when statements about what was going on within YOUR organization are coming from everywhere, when people that were victimized by the culture of your organization are coming forward to speak their truth. But honestly it feels more than just a bit hallow and late. And help me here please. Help me understand that you really had no indications of any of this before? You never heard any stories or complaints from anyone? You never saw it or thought those things were racist? Really?

What do you mean they "wore" them?

Owned up to a lot of their own failings. They basically do a mailbag, answering questions that just ripped them for not covering this story over the last 21 years.
